New Online Comic Strip: The Resurrection of Jimber Jaw™

ANNOUNCING THE LAUNCH OF AN ALL-NEW WEBCOMIC STRIP—THE FIRST IN 3 YEARS!

The Resurrection of Jimber Jaw is a creation from the incredible mind of Edgar Rice Burroughs as only he could conceive it. Imagine two men flying in a small plane over Siberia deep in Russia, one a pilot and the other a cryogenicist. (Don’t look it up; we’ll tell you: cryogenics is the branch of physics dealing with the production and effects of very low temperatures.) Then engine trouble tragically causes the plane to put down in the middle of that vast expanse. And finally, the current from a furious thunderstorm erodes the banks of a small mountain to reveal a human form encased in the ice, lying there perfectly preserved since the Upper Paleolithic era—50,000 years ago!

Could you imagine that? Edgar Rice Burroughs did, and he had only one solution to the discovery: bring that man back to life! What would it take? Once he was thawed out, maybe a major blood transfusion from the pilot, followed by an adrenalin chloride solution into the belly. That would be enough to cause the specimen to open his mouth and yawn! But more would be needed: doses of both anterior pituitary fluid and posterior pituitary fluid. And then finish it off with an injection of sex hormones from sheep. With all of that, and weeks of rest and assurances, it would bring to life a living, breathing man of the Stone Age.

But there’s so much more to the story, and the best way to see how this man—named Jimber Jaw after a grizzly bear he resembled before shaving and getting an update to his wardrobe—coped with this improbability is to subscribe to our webcomics program at www.erburroughs.com. See how this reborn mammoth of a man went to Hollywood and became Jim Stone, mighty wrestler and boxer, and then fell in love with a movie star that resembled his sweetheart from the Stone Age, only to be pitched headlong into the treacherous perils of modern-day romance.

Written by Bobby Panzarella with assistance from writer and artist Trevor Markwart, The Resurrection of Jimber Jaw is a sensational tale that only Edgar Rice Burroughs, the Master of Adventure, could bring to life!

Subscribe to our Edgar Rice Burroughs Online Comic Strips and read the first episode of The Resurrection of Jimber Jaw today with many more to follow!

In 1999, he made the independent film Joey Goes to Jail, for which he wrote the screenplay, as well as acted in it, directed it, and produced it, and he has acted in several films and commercials shot in the Houston area. He has written screenplays for Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., adapting The Resurrection of Jimber Jaw, The Girl from Hollywood, The Monster Men, The Lad and the Lion, The Mucker, The Return of the Mucker, and The Mad King. He has also written the screenplays for a proposed streaming series of The Mad King and is currently working on a proposed streaming series of The Lad and the Lion. He’s mostly focused on being a comics creator, and the first graphic novel he drew, Tales From the Black Circle, was nominated for a Rondo horror award. His four-issue crowdfunded series H. P. Lovercraft’s Beauty and the Beast, which he wrote and illustrated, was recently published as a mainstream graphic novel. His comic book heroes are Richard Corben and Graham “Ghastly” Ingels, and he occasionally signs his work “Morbid” in tribute to the latter.

Jungle Girl to take on new artist, Nik Poliwko, and farewell to Will and Jo Meugniot

Change is coming to the Jungle!

(May 8, 2015 – Tarzana, CA) As of episode #31 our Jungle Girl feature will be drawn by War Chief’s own Nik Poliwko. Our current art team of Will and Jo Meugniot have decided to actively pursue their retirement and realized having a regular weekly assignment was interfering with their travel plans. Per Will, “Drawing Jungle Girl for the great people at ERB was a dream come true, but I’ve been concerned that I couldn’t continue delivering the strip at its current quality and find time for the outside pursuits I’ve wanted to take up in retirement. It’s been a relief that Nik, who is one of my favorite Burroughs artists, is willing to pick up the reins. As a fan of Martin’s writing and Nik’s visual storytelling, I look forward to seeing what comes next in the lives of Gordon and Fou-Tan, and trust you’ll all join me in my enjoyment of the continuing adventures of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Jungle Girl.”

They will be missed! We are excited to continue this wonderful story with Martin Powell, writing, and Nik Poliwko as our artist. Nik is the current artist for The War Chief and also the Editor or our special FB page for ERB web comics www.facebook.com/groups/ERB.Online.Strips/ jungle girl web comic

Raised and taught by the French fencing master, Jules de Vac, Norman was trained to be a simple, brutal, English-hating, killing machine. The only influence over him, besides de Vac, is a Priest who taught Norman his letters and chivalry towards women. But, the Priest was found mysteriously murdered in his cottage.

In another guise, that of Roger de Conde, Norman becomes involved with de Montfort’s daughter, Bertrade – defending her against her and her father’s enemies. She notes in him a curious resemblance to the English King’s son and heir, Prince Edward.

Web Comic: The Outlaw of Torn

As Norman begins to sense his true origins, de Vac turns against Norman – costing de Vac his life. The fencing master had kidnapped Norman as a child to serve as the vehicle of vengeance against the King. As de Vac dies, he reveals Norman’s true origins. With his identity known, can Norman still be sure of winning the hand of Bertrade, daughter of Simon de Montfort, the King’s mortal enemy?

When Edgar Rice Burroughs first established himself as a writer with Under the Moons of Mars / A Princess of Mars in early1912, he was asked by his publisher, Thomas Metcalf of All Story Magazine, to write another story and to center it in medieval times. He did so, submitting The Outlaw of Torn. After three rewrites, it was still rejected by Metcalf. But he was told to not give up and to write something else. His next novel was Tarzan of The Apes which established Burroughs’ writing career. The Outlaw of Torn was finally published as a five part serial in New Story Magazine in early 1914, but it wasn’t published in book form until 1927. This is one of only two historical novels Mr. Burroughs wrote, the other being I Am a Barbarian, set in Caligula’s Rome and first published in 1967 – seventeen years after Mr. Burroughs’ death.

(October, 18 2014 – Tarzana, CA) I promised to take my lord to the jungle,” replied the Cambodian. “There it is. Deep in the jungle, King falls, breaks his compass and becomes hopelessly lost. On the eighth morning, as a fever overtakes King, he has hallucinations. Or so he believes when he encounters sad-faced queens on ghostly elephants in the dark shadows of the jungle where the ruins of their ancient cities still stand. Then, someone rescues him. Or so he dreams.

Adventure in a lost city of a secret kingdom awaits King – an American student of medicine, who came to the jungle to study strange maladies and, once there, becomes an explorer who stumbles upon the many thousand year-old secret of THE LAND OF THE HIDDEN MEN.

Asia, this vast continent of ancient civilizations and mysterious peoples, has many corners little known to the rest of the world. To survive in this ancient land, Gordon King must combat the warriors of the lost city of Pnom Dhek and battle the loathsome Leper King of Lodidhapura for the love of the beautiful jungle princess, Fou-tan.

Is the legend true, that while he can escape tigers and wild elephants, no man may look upon the ghost of the dead Khmer ancients and live? The young American soon finds that a courageous man might easily enter the treacherous depths of the jungle, but it is quite another matter as to whether he might ever come out again, alive.

Make Way for Edgar Rice Burroughs’ “The Mucker” WebComic

Returning to the spotlight for the first time in a century, Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic rough ‘n tumble man of action, The Mucker, is set to make his digital debut on Saturday, January 18, 2014, in an all-new adventure strip written by Ron Marz and drawn by Lee Moder.

The announcement of the new web comic strip – available exclusively online at EdgarRiceBurroughs.com/comics – was made today by representatives of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., the company founded by the author himself to protect and maintain his works for generations.

The Mucker Web Comic See the new strip…

“I grew up on the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs and, to a large extent, I’m the kind of writer I am because of Edgar Rice Burroughs,” said writer Ron Marz, known for his work on Silver Surfer, Green Lantern and Witchblade, among others. “I’m following not only in his footsteps, but in those of so many other creators who have left their mark on these concepts and characters. My job is to make these stories worthy for existing fans and completely accessible for new fans.”

Though not as well-known as Burroughs’ other works of science fiction, fantasy and adventure, like Tarzan of the Apes and John Carter of Mars, The Mucker is a unique story about the exploits of Burroughs’ only anti-hero – Billy Byrne, a brash and brawling street tough from Chicago’s West Side – grounded in the harsh realities of life in the slums of the early 1900s. Decades before Indiana Jones uncovered the Lost Ark and Rambo fought his personal guerrilla wars, the ruthless Mucker would find himself on whatever side of the law suited his savage nature, taking on crooked fight promoters, brutal gangsters, sinister kidnappers, ferocious headhunters and a femme fatale or two.

Artist Lee Moder, known for his work on Legion of Superheroes, Wonder Woman and Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E., combines a classic sense of design, setting and anatomy with a flair for exciting storytelling. “Lee has already filled sketchbooks with designs and research for The Mucker, getting a feel for the characters and the settings,” said Marz. “It really shows in the finished strips.”

Based on the original novels, the first four strips will be available online for free at EdgarRiceBurroughs.com/comics beginning Saturday, January 18, 2014. All upcoming episodes, and many others, may be enjoyed anytime, anywhere for just a $1.99 a month, with a subscription to the official Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Digital Comic Strips service. Regularly updated and expertly curated, the service currently features numerous, all-new adventure series based on classic Burroughs stories including Tarzan, Pellucidar, The Eternal Savage, The Land that Time Forgot and Carson of Venus.

“Hardcore Burroughs fans consider The Mucker one of his [Burroughs] best works,” added Marz. “Adapting these novels gives me a chance to expose a great story to an audience who might not be familiar with it.

Watch for more announcements next month. Just $1.99 per month. See free samples of all the strips and subscribe at www.edgarriceburroughs.com/comics.

The Land that Time Forgot – Another New Comic Strip Launch

As a terror-ridden captive in an enemy submarine during World War I, Bowen Tyler’s exciting adventure really begins when he is deposited on the rocky shore of a monster-ridden lost world where time had stopped!

A journal is recovered from a thermos found on the coast of Greenland. The journal was written by Bowen J. Tyler, an American passenger on a ship sunk in the English Channel in 1916 by a German U-boat – the U-33. Bowen and a female survivor, Lys La Rue, had been rescued by a British tugboat which was also sunk. Its crew managed to capture the German submarine when it surfaced. Unfortunately, the remaining British ships continued to regard the U-boat as an enemy, and they are unable to bring it to port. Then, sabotage to their navigation equipment sends the U-33 astray in the South Atlantic.

Circumstances force the British and Germans to work together for survival. With its provisions poisoned by the saboteur, the U-33 is low on fuel when they spot a large island ringed by cliffs. Finding a fresh water subterranean passage, they follow it in the hope of replenishing their water supply. The U-boat surfaces in a tropical river teeming with primitive extinct creatures. Attacked, the U-33 re-submerges and travels further inland in search of safe harbor. Surfacing in a lake, they go ashore and are attacked by a horde of primitive beast-men. They are able to take a prisoner, Ahm – a Neanderthal, from whom they learn the native name for the island is Caspak.

Land That Time Forgot
See the new strip…

Bowen’s journal states, “I have experienced a cosmic cycle, with all its changes and evolutions for that which I have seen with my own eyes in this brief interval of time-things that no other mortal eye had seen before, glimpses of a world past, a world dead, a world so long dead that even in the lowest Cambrian stratum no trace of it remains.”

While on an exploration mission searching for food and water, Lys disappears. Bowen leaves the other survivors to find and rescue Lys, his new love interest. Reunited, they discover that the Germans have taken over the sub and departed, leaving them stranded in THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT.

New Comic Launch – Tarzan of the Apes, A Classic Adaptation

“I had this story from one who had no business to tell it to me, or to any other.” With that opening line, Edgar Rice Burroughs’ story of an orphaned baby raised by apes in equatorial Africa created a cultural phenomenon over 100 years ago. Today, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. launches a new online comic strip to commemorate this classic story.

True to the book, the new TARZAN OF THE APES comic strip will be a classic adaptation of this universally known story of survival, self-reliance, romance and freedom from societal norms. Written by Roy Thomas, drawn by Pablo Marcos with coloring by Oscar Gonzalez, this strip will intrigue you.

In the novel, John Clayton was born in the western coastal jungles of equatorial Africa to a marooned couple from England, John Clayton Sr. [Lord Greystoke] and Alice Rutherford Clayton [Lady Greystoke]. After his parent’s death (Lord Greystoke is killed by the savage king-ape Kerchak) baby John is adopted by Kala, the fierce she-ape, who names him “TARZAN” meaning “white skin” in ape language. Raised to manhood by Kala who loved him dearly, baby TARZAN remains ignorant of his human heritage.

Tarzan of the Apes
See the new strip…

Deep in the wild African jungle, TARZAN learns survival secrets: how to talk with animals, swing through the trees, and fight against the powerful predators surrounding him. TARZAN grows to the strength and courage of his fellow apes. In time, his human intelligence promised TARZAN the kingship of the tribe. And, after a fight to the death with the king-ape Kerchak, TARZAN truly became Lord of the Jungle and King of the Apes.

Eventually, outsiders finally penetrate the jungle, bringing with them the wantonness of “civilized” greed and lust – but also the first white woman Tarzan had ever seen. Suddenly, Tarzan must choose between two worlds. Later, when asked how he came to be in this savage jungle, Tarzan replied, “I was born there. My mother was an ape, and of course she couldn’t tell me much about it. I never knew who my father was.”

Adventure and discovery await!
