Carson of Venus to Re-Launch with New artists, same colorist, story and writer

New artists, same colorist, story and writer [Martin Powell]

Our Carson of Venus web comic strip was just the second strip introduced in our newly expanded program back in 2013. Written by Martin Powell and drawn by the masterful artist, Tom Floyd, with Diana Leto doing the colors, it became one of the most popular of our many strips. Health issues required Tom to step down two years ago, but we want to recognize his early contributions to our fledgling web comic program. Thank you, Tom!

And now, we are pleased to introduce our new team on this relaunch. Still written by Martin Powell and colored by Diana Leto, we’d like you to meet Paul Abrams, our new artist, and Kurt Hathaway, our new letterer. See their bios below.

The Man-Eater: an all new web comic in our comic subscription lineup

Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. Presents

The Man-Eater
an all new web comic in our comic subscription lineup

In May-June 1915, Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote a film scenario titled “Ben, King of the Beasts.” When he could not secure a movie deal, the story was serialized in The New York Evening Worldnewspapers that November as “The Man-Eater.” The 37,000-word adventure novella was combined with Burroughs’ succeeding post-apocalyptic novella and released in hardback by Science-Fiction & Fantasy Publications in 1957 as Beyond Thirty and The Man-Eater.

THE PLOT
In the Belgian Congo, big game hunters Jefferson Scott, Jr. and Robert Gordon befriend the Methodist missionary Reverend Sangamon Morton and his wife Mary and daughter, Ruth, whom Scott soon marries. Gordon is entrusted with returning stock certificates—the inheritance of the Scotts’ young daughter Virginia—to America for safekeeping with Scott’s father.

When Scott and the elder Mortons are killed by hostile natives, Belgian forces rescue Ruth and Virginia, who relocate to America to live with Jefferson Scott, Sr. There, they find that their inheritance has disappeared. When Scott, Sr. dies and his nephew Scott Taylor arrives to claim the estate, the race is on to establish Virginia’s birthright—a quest that will lead Virginia and Gordon’s son, Dick, to darkest Africa in pursuit of the truth, pursued by Taylor. There, the rival factions encounter a huge lion whose fate becomes entwined with theirs—in a chase that returns them all to the family estate in Virginia.

New Artist – Benito Gallego For The New Adventures of Tarzan comic strip

The comic strip, The New Adventures of Tarzan, written by Roy Thomas, now features an exciting new artist, Benito Gallego. The former artist for this comic strip, Tom Grinberg – who was instrumental in helping us launch our web comic program – has moved on to other projects.

tarzan-benito-0

BENITO GALLEGO
Benito Gallego (born in Madrid, Spain) decided he loved comics at a tender age, even before he learned to read. He’s been drawing all his life – filling any blank space on every piece of paper that fell into his hands with his doodles. Benito collaborated by providing comics and pin-ups for fanzines and publications in Spain while attending the Faculty of Fine Arts in Madrid. And, he continued drawing comics while developing a parallel career in advertising and graphic design –which paid the bills for many years.

After contacting Roy Thomas, Benito got his first professional assignments working with Roy on both his series’, Anthem and Captain Thunder & Blue Bolt – published by Heroic Publishing. Since then, Benito has been working with other top talents in the comic medium such as Cary Bates and Sal Buscema at DC Comics, Brian Azzarello, and Paul Kupperberg. Benito has produced a variety of illustration work including Marvel character trading cards and Monsters! and Dinosaurs for Upper Deck and he also created illustrations for books like the Diego’s Dragon series, written by Kevin Gerard.

Benito recently finished artwork for a graphic novel on the life of reggae star, Bob Marley, written by Jim McCarthy, while also working on Apama the Undiscovered Animal – a comic series based on concepts and characters from the movie: Hero Tomorrow, created by Milo Miller and Ted Sikora.

Benito lives in Alicante, on the east coast of Spain, with his wife, Soraya, and daughter, Alona, who are his most ferocious and grateful art critics. You may follow Benito’s art at www.Facebook.com/BenitoGallego.Art/

The Lad and the Lion

lad-and-the-lion-header

An all new web comic in our subscription lineup

Plotters moved toward the assassination of an old King and his grandson and heir, Michael, in a remote European Kingdom. But the old Monarch was wise and saw what was coming. Before he was killed, the King arranged for Prince Michael to be spirited away on a ship. But, there was a shipwreck and the injured Prince is swept overboard. Climbing aboard an empty lifeboat, with his memory gone, the Prince is rescued by a mad, epileptic old man piloting a tramp steamer. Also aboard – a caged lion. For years the old man kept them prisoner on his ship – beating the Prince and torturing the lion.

lad-and-the-lion-preview

The Lad and the Lion, written in 1914, is an adventure story by Edgar Rice Burroughs®. The story was first published as a three-part serial in the All-Story Weekly. The Lad and the Lion is also the first story by ERB to be adapted to film – a five-reel, black and white, silent movie released in 1917. As of now, this film is officially missing from any archive. Do you have a copy? The Lad and the Lion didn’t appear in book form until the film was remade as The Lion Man in 1937 – 20 years later. The Lad and the Lion was also the first book edition published by ERB’s own publishing firm, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc.

Meanwhile, on the ship, Michael befriends the lion and they eventually break free as the lion pays his tormentor back, in the ultimate way, for the years of mistreatment. Michael and the lion eventually land ashore on the Northern African coast, where they live and hunt together in the wild, at the margins of the jungle and the desert. Encountering a band of Arabs, Michael meets and falls in love with Nakhla, an Arab princess, but her father does everything he can to keep them apart.

Prince Otto – the King’s brother and one of the conspirators who murdered the King – becomes King. But he and his son are disliked by the people. Jealousy and wealth intersect in the Kingdom as power plays and marriages of convenience are the norm – where no real love exists for any of the conspirators who have seized power.

The day comes when Michael regains his memory and realizes who he is. Will he announce his survival – taking his rightful place on the throne of his Kingdom? Subscribe to our new web comic strip, and be thoroughly entertained by the twisting adventure that only Edgar Rice Burroughs can create.

Best Regards,
The Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. Team

Launching all new web comic – The Outlaw of Torn – in English and Spanish

Before Tarzan… there was Norman of Torn. His origin cloaked in mystery, he is misguided by an evil force… all the while building the most powerful army in England.

(January 17, 2015 – Tarzana, CA) Norman’s story begins in 1243, during the power struggle between King Henry III and the KIng’s brother-in-law, Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester. At 17, Norman of Torn was the Greatest Swordsman in England, at 18 he had a large bounty on his head, and at 19 he was the leader of the most powerful and ruthless army in the land. And, the outlaw Norman of Torn becomes the most feared warrior of all England.

Launching all new web comic – The Outlaw of Torn – in English and Spanish

Raised and taught by the French fencing master, Jules de Vac, Norman was trained to be a simple, brutal, English-hating, killing machine. The only influence over him, besides de Vac, is a Priest who taught Norman his letters and chivalry towards women. But, the Priest was found mysteriously murdered in his cottage.

In another guise, that of Roger de Conde, Norman becomes involved with de Montfort’s daughter, Bertrade – defending her against her and her father’s enemies. She notes in him a curious resemblance to the English King’s son and heir, Prince Edward.

Web Comic: The Outlaw of Torn

As Norman begins to sense his true origins, de Vac turns against Norman – costing de Vac his life. The fencing master had kidnapped Norman as a child to serve as the vehicle of vengeance against the King. As de Vac dies, he reveals Norman’s true origins. With his identity known, can Norman still be sure of winning the hand of Bertrade, daughter of Simon de Montfort, the King’s mortal enemy?

When Edgar Rice Burroughs first established himself as a writer with Under the Moons of Mars / A Princess of Mars in early1912, he was asked by his publisher, Thomas Metcalf of All Story Magazine, to write another story and to center it in medieval times. He did so, submitting The Outlaw of Torn. After three rewrites, it was still rejected by Metcalf. But he was told to not give up and to write something else. His next novel was Tarzan of The Apes which established Burroughs’ writing career. The Outlaw of Torn was finally published as a five part serial in New Story Magazine in early 1914, but it wasn’t published in book form until 1927. This is one of only two historical novels Mr. Burroughs wrote, the other being I Am a Barbarian, set in Caligula’s Rome and first published in 1967 – seventeen years after Mr. Burroughs’ death.

Make Way for Edgar Rice Burroughs’ “The Mucker” WebComic

Returning to the spotlight for the first time in a century, Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic rough ‘n tumble man of action, The Mucker, is set to make his digital debut on Saturday, January 18, 2014, in an all-new adventure strip written by Ron Marz and drawn by Lee Moder.

The announcement of the new web comic strip – available exclusively online at EdgarRiceBurroughs.com/comics – was made today by representatives of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., the company founded by the author himself to protect and maintain his works for generations.

The Mucker Web Comic See the new strip…

“I grew up on the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs and, to a large extent, I’m the kind of writer I am because of Edgar Rice Burroughs,” said writer Ron Marz, known for his work on Silver Surfer, Green Lantern and Witchblade, among others. “I’m following not only in his footsteps, but in those of so many other creators who have left their mark on these concepts and characters. My job is to make these stories worthy for existing fans and completely accessible for new fans.”

Though not as well-known as Burroughs’ other works of science fiction, fantasy and adventure, like Tarzan of the Apes and John Carter of Mars, The Mucker is a unique story about the exploits of Burroughs’ only anti-hero – Billy Byrne, a brash and brawling street tough from Chicago’s West Side – grounded in the harsh realities of life in the slums of the early 1900s. Decades before Indiana Jones uncovered the Lost Ark and Rambo fought his personal guerrilla wars, the ruthless Mucker would find himself on whatever side of the law suited his savage nature, taking on crooked fight promoters, brutal gangsters, sinister kidnappers, ferocious headhunters and a femme fatale or two.

Artist Lee Moder, known for his work on Legion of Superheroes, Wonder Woman and Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E., combines a classic sense of design, setting and anatomy with a flair for exciting storytelling. “Lee has already filled sketchbooks with designs and research for The Mucker, getting a feel for the characters and the settings,” said Marz. “It really shows in the finished strips.”

Based on the original novels, the first four strips will be available online for free at EdgarRiceBurroughs.com/comics beginning Saturday, January 18, 2014. All upcoming episodes, and many others, may be enjoyed anytime, anywhere for just a $1.99 a month, with a subscription to the official Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Digital Comic Strips service. Regularly updated and expertly curated, the service currently features numerous, all-new adventure series based on classic Burroughs stories including Tarzan, Pellucidar, The Eternal Savage, The Land that Time Forgot and Carson of Venus.

“Hardcore Burroughs fans consider The Mucker one of his [Burroughs] best works,” added Marz. “Adapting these novels gives me a chance to expose a great story to an audience who might not be familiar with it.

Pellucidar: The World at the Earth’s Core – Relaunch with brand new Art!

Pellucidar Revisited: We have just completed the transition to an exciting new Artist, Gary Kwapisz. Gary brings years of experience to this strip, having previously drawn for almost every comic book publisher [see his bio below]. Our prolific Writer, Chuck Dixon, will continue to write for us. Many of our subscribers had wondered why the PELLUCIDAR comic strip hadn’t been coming out regularly. We want to thank Artist Tom Lyle for getting PELLUCIDAR up and running. Tom has scheduling conflicts that keep him from continuing the PELLUCIDAR strip. You can continue to view Tom’s original strips in our “Bonus Material” section.

When David Innes and Abner Perry build a revolutionary mining machine, their plan is to uncover vast mineral deposits far beneath the surface of the earth. But, on the “Iron Mole’s” first trip, they find themselves hurtling toward the center of the earth where death from the Earth’s molten mass of white-hot magma seems certain.

Instead, what Innes and Perry discover is that the earth’s crust is only 500 miles thick with an inner surface — and its inhabited! In Pellucidar, dinosaurs roam through jungles and saber-toothed tigers hunt mastodon and mammoth. A tiny sun, the molten core of the Earth, hangs in the center of the heavens, shedding perpetual daylight upon Pellucidar. Because the sun never sets, it is always “now” and there is no such thing as time. Stranger still, because Pellucidar rests on the inner side of the Earth’s crust, there is no horizon. The land curves upwards, as if you were standing on the inside of a gigantic bowl.

Humans dwell in Pellucidar — stone-age men and women who must fight to survive in this savage world. Even worse these humans have been made slaves of the Mahars, a race of intelligent but sinister reptiles who look upon humans as nothing more than beasts of burden or tasty snacks in one of their ghoulish ceremonies.

New Pellucidar Comic Ad
See the new strip…

Can David Innes and Abner Perry escape capture? Can they free humanity from the Mahar tyranny? And when David meets Dian the Beautiful who becomes his one true love, what struggles must he overcome before he can claim her as his own. And together, what adventures await them on Pellucidar?

Chuck Dixon and Gary Kwapisz will continue to bring to you exciting new adventures of Pellucidar, set in the future when David and his bride, Dian the Beautiful, are parents of feisty teenagers and the Mahars, through intrigue and sabotage, make an ominous comeback. Stay tuned!
