The Outlaw of Torn Relaunch

Continue reading this popular comic strip story

Before Tarzan… there was Norman of Torn.
His origin cloaked in mystery, he is misguided by an evil force… all the while building the most powerful army in England.

Norman’s story begins in 1243, during the power struggle between King Henry III and the KIng’s brother-in-law, Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester. At 17, Norman of Torn was the Greatest Swordsman in England, at 18  he had a large bounty on his head, and at 19 he was the leader of the most powerful and ruthless army in the land. And, the outlaw Norman of Torn becomes the most feared warrior of all England.

Raised and taught by the French fencing master, Jules de Vac, Norman was trained to be a simple, brutal, English-hating, killing machine. The only influence over him, besides de Vac, is a Priest who taught Norman his letters and chivalry towards women. But, the Priest was found mysteriously murdered in his cottage. In another guise, that of Roger de Conde, Norman becomes involved with de Montfort’s daughter, Bertrade, defending her against her and her father’s enemies. She notes in him a curious resemblance to the English King’s son and heir, Prince Edward.

As Norman begins to sense his true origins, de Vac turns against Norman, costing de Vac his life. The fencing master had kidnapped Norman as a child to serve as the vehicle of vengeance against the King. As de Vac dies, he reveals Norman’s true origins. With his identity known, can Norman still be sure of winning the hand of Bertrade, daughter of Simon de Montfort, the King’s mortal enemy?

THE OUTLAW OF TORN TEAM

WRITER Tom Simmons

“I have been a Burroughs fan for a very long time,” says screenwriter-graphic novelist Tom Simmons. “At the age of 12 in 1962, I read the ACE paperback edition of Pirates of Venus, and never looked back. I’ve read everything else ERB wrote in the interim, many of the stories several times over.”

Perhaps it is fitting, then, that Simmons was given the opportunity to adapt ERB’s two historical novels, The Outlaw of Torn and I Am a Barbarian, into online strip format. The writer has a History degree, and his other material is in large part of that genre: in 2015 he adapted his screenplay Crispus Caesar about the 4th century struggle between paganism and Christianity into a graphic novel, and a year later he completed a spec script entitled Darling Eddy on the final horrific days of Edgar Allan Poe. Also on his writing desk are screen adaptations of Gore Vidal’s novel Julian about the so-called “apostate” Roman emperor and Richard Slotkin’s stark Civil War novel The Crater.

“Edgar Rice Burroughs advanced his storytelling expertise mightily between 1912 – when “Outlaw” was written – and 1941, the year of “Barbarian,” says the writer. Both stories have proven a massive challenge to adapt, and scale to online strip and eventually graphic novel format – but that’s a huge part of the fun.”

Tom was nominated in five categories at the Action on Film (AOF) festival in 2010.

New Artist – Benito Gallego For The New Adventures of Tarzan comic strip

The comic strip, The New Adventures of Tarzan, written by Roy Thomas, now features an exciting new artist, Benito Gallego. The former artist for this comic strip, Tom Grinberg – who was instrumental in helping us launch our web comic program – has moved on to other projects.

tarzan-benito-0

BENITO GALLEGO
Benito Gallego (born in Madrid, Spain) decided he loved comics at a tender age, even before he learned to read. He’s been drawing all his life – filling any blank space on every piece of paper that fell into his hands with his doodles. Benito collaborated by providing comics and pin-ups for fanzines and publications in Spain while attending the Faculty of Fine Arts in Madrid. And, he continued drawing comics while developing a parallel career in advertising and graphic design –which paid the bills for many years.

After contacting Roy Thomas, Benito got his first professional assignments working with Roy on both his series’, Anthem and Captain Thunder & Blue Bolt – published by Heroic Publishing. Since then, Benito has been working with other top talents in the comic medium such as Cary Bates and Sal Buscema at DC Comics, Brian Azzarello, and Paul Kupperberg. Benito has produced a variety of illustration work including Marvel character trading cards and Monsters! and Dinosaurs for Upper Deck and he also created illustrations for books like the Diego’s Dragon series, written by Kevin Gerard.

Benito recently finished artwork for a graphic novel on the life of reggae star, Bob Marley, written by Jim McCarthy, while also working on Apama the Undiscovered Animal – a comic series based on concepts and characters from the movie: Hero Tomorrow, created by Milo Miller and Ted Sikora.

Benito lives in Alicante, on the east coast of Spain, with his wife, Soraya, and daughter, Alona, who are his most ferocious and grateful art critics. You may follow Benito’s art at www.Facebook.com/BenitoGallego.Art/

Tarzan Mosaic unveiling

Edgar Rice Burroughs Presents
Tarzan Mosaic unveiling
at the Tarzana Community & Cultural Center

Thomas Yeates’ well known image, TARZAN AND THE GOLDEN LION, has been created in mosaic form [5′ diameter] and installed in the plaza of the Tarzana Community & Cultural Center.

tarzan-mosaic-1

The artist, Thomas Yeates, is a long-time favorite of all TARZAN fans. TARZAN AND THE GOLDEN LION is a modern version of the logo done by Roy G. Krenkel from 1966 that was originally modeled after the P. J. Monahan oil painting used on the front cover of Argosy Weekly Magazine Dec. 9 1922.

The mosaic itself was done by Vita Nova Luxury Mosaics located in Pacoima, California – 818-897-2432. Gali Rotstein was the mosaic artist – her detail and vision is wonderful and a faithful rendering of the Yeates art. Heidi L. Huber really moved it along with her energy and enthusiasm for the project.

Tarzan Themed Stained Glass

Edgar Rice Burroughs® Presents
Tarzan Themed Stained Glass
and other Burroughs’ themes by artist Leia Barrett-Durham [Powell]

Once again, Edgar Rice Burroughs is making history. Internationally-renowned, award-winning stained glass master Leia Barrett-Durham (Powell) is the first stained glass artist in history to be licensed to make representations of an author’s published works. As a master craftswoman, she could have had her pick of the litter, but her love for Edgar Rice Burroughs inspired her to work with ERB, Inc.

tarzan-stained-glass

In celebration of the release of The Legend of Tarzan, Leia has created a unique stained glass window for ERB, Inc. to be auctioned off in Tarzana at the ECOF 2016. This window represents Tarzan, Jane, Tantor, Mangani, and Numa next to an African jungle stream. Tarzan is in the process of his iconic yell, with Jane steadfast by his side, while Numa looks directly at us, drinking from the stream but still ever vigilant for predators. Tantor playfully laps at the stream, and our ape looks at us with a critical eye, determining if we are also Mangani.

The Legend of Tarzan window [rough sketch above] will be the third licensed masterpiece window Leia has created with themes inspired by Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Worlds of Adventure – but it shall not be the last. This window [about 22 1/2″ tall and 28 1/2″ wide] is currently being created, but Leia tells us the image above is a good indicator of what the window will look like when finished.

For those of you with tighter budgets, Leia has assured us that she is creating other smaller sun catchers and panels related to Tarzan, John Carter, Carson of Venus, The Eternal Savage, The Land That Time Forgot, and many more! Below is a sneak peek of what you’re in for.

Illustrating Barsoom

barsoom

A wonderful article about the hard effort that goes into making the art of Barsoom:

When an artist is learning to draw or paint there are certain subjects at which they all must try their hand. A landscape. Flowers. Animals. Children. With varying degrees of success, the artist has to have at least tried to depict certain types of scenes from low lighting, moody, introspective pieces to high energy, action scenes. The artist has to experience what it is like to capture these elements on paper or canvas.
