Anniversary of “The Land That Time Forgot” Humble Beginnings

Edgar Rice Burroughs Fan reminds us that:

Land That Time Forgot
On this day in 1917, ERB began work on ‘The Lost U-Boat,’ a story which became THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT. He completed it in about five weeks, and it was the first installment of his intended Caspak trilogy.

In 1918, ‘Blue Book Magazine’ editor Ray Long was responsible for renaming Burroughs’ novella THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT.

Illustrating Barsoom

barsoom

A wonderful article about the hard effort that goes into making the art of Barsoom:

When an artist is learning to draw or paint there are certain subjects at which they all must try their hand. A landscape. Flowers. Animals. Children. With varying degrees of success, the artist has to have at least tried to depict certain types of scenes from low lighting, moody, introspective pieces to high energy, action scenes. The artist has to experience what it is like to capture these elements on paper or canvas.

Jungle Girl to take on new artist, Nik Poliwko, and farewell to Will and Jo Meugniot

Change is coming to the Jungle!

(May 8, 2015 – Tarzana, CA) As of episode #31 our Jungle Girl feature will be drawn by War Chief’s own Nik Poliwko. Our current art team of Will and Jo Meugniot have decided to actively pursue their retirement and realized having a regular weekly assignment was interfering with their travel plans. Per Will, “Drawing Jungle Girl for the great people at ERB was a dream come true, but I’ve been concerned that I couldn’t continue delivering the strip at its current quality and find time for the outside pursuits I’ve wanted to take up in retirement. It’s been a relief that Nik, who is one of my favorite Burroughs artists, is willing to pick up the reins. As a fan of Martin’s writing and Nik’s visual storytelling, I look forward to seeing what comes next in the lives of Gordon and Fou-Tan, and trust you’ll all join me in my enjoyment of the continuing adventures of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Jungle Girl.”

They will be missed! We are excited to continue this wonderful story with Martin Powell, writing, and Nik Poliwko as our artist. Nik is the current artist for The War Chief and also the Editor or our special FB page for ERB web comics www.facebook.com/groups/ERB.Online.Strips/ jungle girl web comic

The Girl from Hollywood – Another Classic Web Comic

Developed from a story by Edgar Rice Burroughs The Master of Adventure

Hollywood was a prime destination for beautiful young women in the 1920s. These women arrived from out in the country and other cities. They came full of hope of becoming major stars in the newfound motion picture profession. But most were at risk of falling under the influence of agents who had many ways to control their destiny. Women who grew up in the Hollywood area had more solid roots but even they would yield, at their peril, to the promises made to them but never kept.

Edgar Rice Burroughs gives an early look into the subculture of Hollywood, with drugs directing human activity, that continues to this day. The New York Times described The Girl from Hollywood as “a fascinating cultural document about a California ranch family ruined by booze, dope and movieland promiscuity.” During Prohibition, alcohol use was common, but distributors had to keep it hidden, hoping to not be discovered by the authorities. But hiding was next to impossible – so framing someone else for murder was one way to throw the authorities off your trail.

John Carter the Only Disney’s Loss-making British Movie

John Carter of Mars Goldenage Comic Online

It’s a sad news to bring up, but our beloved John Carter is the only movie that hasn’t quite perfmored up to snuff, bringing in 0.93 cents for every dollar invested. Various criticis and bloggers around the web remarked the movie was an underappreciated gem, failing to attract the audience it deserves. A real shame, but our hero lives on in our comics!

Disney’s Darkest Moments

A nice article at MoviePilot looking at some of the darkest moments in Disney’s movies, showing their mutli-faceted nature (they’re not just for kids!)

Disneys Darkest Moments
Disney films are adored the world over. Their joyous combination of love, charm, and happy-ever-endings have induced smiles and laughter from all of us.

Equally, they have never been afraid to depict utterly bleak sadness to throw an even bigger emotional punch. Like in Dumbo, when our cute little elephant touches trunks with his imprisoned mother as she sings him a lullaby; or in Bambi, when his mother’s shot dead by a poacher.
