Shipping Update: Tarzan Books #13–16

We have received the print proofs for Tarzan volumes #13–16 in the Edgar Rice Burroughs Authorized Library (they look awesome!) and ordered the final books from the printer, and now we are just waiting for them to arrive in our warehouse. As we had indicated when the set went up for preorder, we had hoped for the books to ship to customers before the end of Q1 2022 (i.e., March 31), but now the printer estimates that the books will arrive in our warehouse sometime in April.

The good news is we have significantly expanded the length of the afterwords and archival sections for this set of books, so you will have more to enjoy when you do get them in your hands! To give you some idea of what we mean, in Tarzan #13–16, the afterwords (detailing the behind-the scenes history for each novel) range from 30–47 pages and the “From the Archives of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc.” sections (featuring rare and never-before-published materials from our archives) range from 56 pages to a whopping 78 pages! Among the archival treasures in Tarzan books #13–16, you will find:

  • A previously unpublished film treatment written by Edgar Rice Burroughs for Tarzan and the City of Gold that was submitted to MGM circa 1938
  • The never-before-in-print four-page manuscript of ERB’s “Pronunciation of Coined Words Used in the Tarzan Novels” (ever wonder how to pronounce “Nemone”?)
  • Previously unpublished illustrations by ERB, including maps; prehistoric creatures and beasts from Pellucidar; characters from the novels; and the O-220 dirigible that carried Tarzan, Jason Gridley, and crew to the Earth’s core!
  • Tons of never-before-seen correspondence, and much, much more!

Here’s a peek at the proofs to tide you over until the books hit your mailbox:

Preorder Now—Beyond the Farthest Star™: Restored Edition

Historic New Edition Restoring Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Original Manuscript Text

Beyond the Farthest Star: Restored Edition

Cover art by Frank Frazetta

In 1940, as the world hurtled into the darkness of global conflict, Edgar Rice Burroughs turned his legendary writing talents toward an interstellar tale of wonder and adventure set on a war-racked planet—one whose star was so distant that it was invisible to the Earth’s most powerful telescopes. Featuring a protagonist who is transported to the planet Poloda by means reminiscent of John Carter’s projection to Mars, Beyond the Farthest Star is set in a wholly unique solar system in which all the planets are aligned in the same orbit and connected by means of an atmosphere tube that allows for potential travel between worlds via airplane.

What has been unknown to readers is that the 1941 Blue Book magazine publication comprising Part I of Beyond the Farthest Star was heavily edited, with a substantial number of line edits on almost every page and several lengthy and meaningful passages—some more than a page long—excised throughout. That altered and abridged text was used as the basis for all book editions of the novel—until now. We are pleased to announce that we have gone back to Edgar Rice Burroughs’ original typescript from our archives in Tarzana, California, and restored the author’s preferred text of the novel in Beyond the Farthest Star: Restored Edition. Now, for the first time, enjoy this classic science fiction adventure in the way that Edgar Rice Burroughs intended it to be read!

The Beyond the Farthest Star: Restored Edition will be available in a trade paperback and a hardcover Collector’s Edition. Both editions will feature a newly commissioned frontispiece by renowned artist Mark Schultz; classic interior illustrations by Roy G. Krenkel; an introduction by noted science fiction author Paul Di Filippo; a preface by ERB, Inc. Director of Publishing Christopher Paul Carey discussing the restorations to the text; maps of the planet Poloda and the Omos star system; a diagram of the Unisan alphabet and numbers; and an extensive section of rare and previously unpublished bonus materials mined from the archives of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., in Tarzana, California. The book is expected to ship Early Fall 2021.

A Planet in Peril

When Nazi warplanes blast an American fighter pilot out of the sky, he awakens not in the expected afterlife but on a far-flung planet—one of eleven interconnected worlds hurtling around a strangely constructed star system. On Poloda, he earns a new name—Tangor, one who came from nothing—and a new home among the brave people of Unis, a nation locked in perpetual war against the brutish, totalitarian Kapars. But when news comes of a powerful invention that could turn the tides of the conflict, Tangor must undertake a daring undercover mission behind enemy lines. There, in vile Kapara, he will not only risk life and limb, but also brand himself as a traitor in the eyes of his newfound friends, as he continues his fight for freedom beyond the farthest star!

Historic Sci-fi Legend to make Gaming Debut in John Carter®: Warlord of Mars®

Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Classic Character Brought to Life in a Kickstarter campaign starting April 19

Tarzana, California (March 29, 2021) – Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., today announced that its team is working with FNCPR to develop and publish the video game entitled John Carter: Warlord of Mars.

Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., manages and licenses the creative works of novelist Edgar Rice Burroughs—including Tarzan of the Apes® and John Carter of Mars®. FNCPR Ltd. has acquired the license to develop and publish the John Carter: Warlord of Mars game.

Through this cooperation, the grandfather of science fiction meets state-of-the-art gaming technology in an all-action, first-person adventure video game, bringing the world’s oldest interplanetary warrior to life across PC and Console platforms.

John Carter is the planet-hopping hero that was conceived over 100 years ago by genre-defining writer, Burroughs. As well as being the central character in 11 novels since 1912, he has featured in various comic book incarnations, tabletop games and a feature film, spanning several decades. Carter’s adventures have left a lasting cultural legacy, inspiring writers and scientists like Ray Bradbury, Jerry Siegal, and Carl Sagan. He also profoundly influenced series like Flash Gordon and blockbusters like George Lucas’ Star Wars and James Cameron’s Avatar. Gamers now have the opportunity to immerse themselves in Burroughs’ epic fantasy world.

The creative work on the game is well underway, and Tanglewood Games has been appointed by FNCPR as the lead developer for the project.

The voice cast includes two BAFTA winners. David Elliott takes the lead role of Carter, Brian Bovell as Tars Tarkas, and Kezia Burrows playing the Princess of Mars, Dejah Thoris.

Starting in 1945 at the end of WWII, the gameplay will centre on the soldier John Carter, working on a mission to find Hitler’s secret projects general, Hans Kammler. Kammler is experimenting with a new technology that ultimately transports John Carter to Mars, known to its inhabitants as “Barsoom.”

This echoes the dimension-shifting narrative of the original novels and comics, in which the American Civil War veteran dramatically found himself transcending worlds and fighting for the inhabitants of Mars.

James Sullos, President of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. said:
“One might wonder what Mr. Burroughs, over a century after he first inked the names John Carter, Dejah Thoris, and Tars Tarkas to the page, would have thought to see his characters spring to life in a video game—what in his day would have itself been considered the stuff of science fiction.

“I’d like to think he would be pleased not only to see fans of John Carter play the game and step into his wondrous world of Barsoom, but also to at last set foot on the dying planet himself, with sword in hand, and have the visceral experience of being able to play one of his own heroes in the game. Doubtless he would have been thrilled to see his immortal swordsman and the rich setting of Barsoom come alive in the John Carter: Warlord of Mars video game, exposing his creations to a whole new generation of fans.”

Frazer Nash, from FNCPR, who are publishing the game, said:
“In many ways, John Carter is the original fantasy action hero, thrilling readers and fans well before the likes of Flash Gordon, Superman and Luke Skywalker. Most superheroes have already made their transition into the gaming world; it is high time that John Carter makes his debut.

“The action follows Carter as he meets the weird and wonderful natives of Barsoom, acclimatising himself to Martian gravity, the local customs and Martian languages. His mission includes meeting the mighty Thark warrior, Tars Tarkas, fighting with giant ape-like monsters, and falling in love with the beautiful Princess of Mars, Dejah Thoris. It’s over a century since these characters were created, and we’re excited to find a new way of bringing them to life.”

With initial work on the game well underway, the next step in the process will be launching a Kickstarter crowdfunding initiative to fund the next stage of development. This will be launched on April 19, 2021. To find out more, sign up today http://jcwom.com/

With a deep and epic back catalog of material to draw on, the longer-term character and game development options are boundless.
