When Victoria married Damian Aspinall, it meant she’d have to get used to Damian’s lifelong love of animals. Not only was Damian the owner of two zoos, but he had helped raise two baby gorillas when he was still a child! Damian helped to rear the two baby gorillas until they were able to be released into the wild, an experience that bonded him so strongly to the gorillas that he still thought of them as part of his extended family. He even referred to them as his cousins!

The Wilds celebrates birth of male Masai giraffe calf

CUMBERLAND, OH (WCMH) — The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium announced that a male Masai giraffe calf was born at The Wilds on July 10. The birth was visible to guests who were on an open air safari tour at The Wilds. The calf is reportedly strong and staying close to his mother. The zoo says the calf’s mother, Lulu, is a first-time mother. She was born at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden in 2012. The calf’s father, Raha, was born at the Los Angeles Zoo in April 2006. The calf may be visible to guests on both Wildside and Open-Air Safari Tours.

Monkeys Save a Man’s Life!

monkeysA Chilean tourist survived for nine days while lost in a dense expanse of Bolivian rainforest — thanks to a troop of hero monkeys who “dropped him fruit and led him to shelter and water every day,” the man claimed.

Maykool Coroseo Acuña, 25, went missing from his Max Adventures tour group at Madidi National Park, a protected rainforest in the northwest part of the South American country, National Geographic reported.

Cheetah headed to extinction with just 7,100 left, wildlife experts warn

LONDON (Reuters) – The world’s fastest land animal, the cheetah, is in danger of extinction because it is running out of space, research led by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) has found.

After a sharp decline in numbers there are now just 7,100 cheetahs in the world, or 9 percent of the historic range, the ZSL, Wildlife Conservation Society and Panthera study found.

In Zimbabwe, the study found, these pressures have seen the cheetah population plummet 85 percent from 1,200 to at most 170 animals in just 16 years.

This illegal practice has overtaken trophy poaching in depleting wildlife in Zambia

south africa animalsWhen Synody Mulibehzi woke up June 27, 2012, he had two good arms. By nightfall, he would have just one.

Back then, Mulibehzi and his brother were employed on an anti-poaching team on a conservancy in Zambia, according to accounts made to photographer Benjamin Rutherford. Such teams are employed on game reserves, conservancies and farms, to protect animals from being poached and sold as bushmeat. On that day, Mulibehzi and seven others responded to a report of an early morning gunshot on the conservancy that he regularly patrolled. Armed only with a big stick, Mulibehzi charged headlong into the thick bush.
