Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. has published Tarzan: The Greystoke Legacy Under Siege, a work of fiction that addresses the still-unsolved 1985 murder of primatologist Dian Fossey.

Fossey, an academic and, to many, a real-life Wonder Woman, came to the Rwandan jungle intent on studying and preserving the habitat of endangered mountain gorillas. Fossey swiftly found herself combating the cruelty of poachers and the heartlessness of oil and mining interests, which indiscriminately killed the gorillas out of greed, while filling their pockets with ill-gotten gains. Fossey transformed from scholar to bush guerilla fighter, working to confuse and defeat these environmental terrorists. Tragically, Fossey was brutally murdered in her home in Rwanda on December 26, 1985. On that day, the world lost a champion of the environment, wild endangered habitats and animals.

Tarzan: The Greystoke Legacy Under Siege is a seminal book as it introduces four generations of Tarzan, including Tarzan’s great grandson, Jonathan, who is unsure of his place in the Tarzan Legacy. Also in this novel, Tarzan’s African estate is demolished and many people are killed by an unknown guerilla militia; Tarzan’s son, Jack, is accused of Dian Fossey’s murder and is sought by the authorities; and Tarzan’s grandson, Jackie — who runs the behemoth Greystoke Trust — is accused and imprisoned for crimes against the Crown — a capital offense. AUTHORS

Ralph N. Laughlin grew up in the Midwest. Upon graduation from the University of Iowa’s School of Journalism he joined the General Electric Advertising & Public Relations department. During his career he went on to work for a number of Fortune 500 companies. Upon retirement, he turned his writing talents to pleasure. He has published five books on various subjects, ranging from motivational, to thought provoking, to humorous relief.

He’s been a life-long fan (some say fanatic) of the Tarzan books, leading him to conceive and develop the idea of placing Tarzan and his family in modern times with actual historical events. Tarzan: The Greystoke Legacy Under Siege is the first in a series of such stories along this precept. He currently lives in southwest Virginia.

Ann E. Johnson lives in Maine and writes historical fiction and fantasy. She has received awards for her fiction at the Ocean Park Writers Conference. Ann is retired and spends her days writing, researching, or training in the martial arts of swords, staff, tai chi, karate and jiu jitsu. She began martial arts to enhance her writing and stayed because she found she loved it.

Written at the close of World War I, Burroughs’ alternate history tells of a great 50-year war that finally concludes in 1967 with an Afllied victory culminating in world peace and total freedom. As the new dawn begins, Earth is learning how to put war behind her while simultaneously launching a technologically advanced space craft with a five man crew on its maiden voyage to Mars.

The voyage’s primary mission is to forge diplomatic relations between the civilizations of Mars (known as Barsoom by its inhabitants) and Earth. The ship’s most senior officer, Captain Julian, is forced to deal with space sickness and panic from his old flight school rival, Lt Commander Orthis, who is damaging the ship in his fear — leading to Orthis being put in irons. Orthis, consumed with rage, sabotages the ship’s engines resulting in a forced landing on the Moon.

During the descent, the spaceship is caught in a lunar spiral that pulls the ship deep into the center of the Moon revealing an earth-like environment with plants, animals and inhabitants. Julian gives Orthis a chance of redemption — not only for Orthis’ sake but for the survival of his crew, as every man is needed.

Julian and the crew explore and discover a variety of creatures and civilizations. While navigating the majestic forest-like inner moon, they meet the beautiful princess Nah-ee-lah, who captures the eye of both Julian and Orthis. Will Julian’s moral instincts prevail when faced with Orthis’ selfish desires?

The Earthmen soon encounter the warlike civilization of the Kalkars — human-like creatures whose thirst for power will capture the diabolical passions of Orthis. Together, Orthis and the Kalkars turn their desires toward Earth, launching an invasion and 400-year occupation, pitting future generations of Julian’s and Orthis’ descendants in the ultimate struggle of human freedom versus totalitarian rule — an underlying theme in many of Burroughs’ adventures.

Company Expands Staff, Launches Publishing Division

Tarzana, CA (June 7, 2017) — Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. (ERB, Inc.), the company that manages and licenses the creative works of novelist Edgar Rice Burroughs, including TARZAN OF THE APES and JOHN CARTER OF MARS, is pleased to announce changes to its executive structure in the areas of operations, publishing, and special projects effective June 1, 2017.

Cathy Mann Wilbanks has been promoted to Vice President of Operations. In recent years, Ms. Wilbanks served as Archivist, where she oversaw the company’s vast library of historical publications, artwork and other artifacts owned by the company. She will now be responsible for all internal operations and continue to assist in marketing. Ms. Wilbanks, who joined ERB, Inc. in 1984, holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education and Masters of Education from California State University Northridge.

Tyler Wilbanks, Director of Operations-Publishing, will now be responsible for all aspects of the company’s new publishing division. Mr. Wilbanks has served as the corporate internet technician since 2008, and is a recent graduate of California State University Northridge with a bachelor’s degree in Business Management.

Scott Tracy Griffin joins the company in the newly created position of Director of Special Projects. Mr. Griffin, a writer and film historian whose collaboration with the company dates to 1996, will work with the company’s recently launched publishing division, special events, conventions and new print and digital creative endeavors. He is the author of Tarzan on Film (Titan Books, 2016) and Tarzan: The Centennial Celebration (Titan Books, 2012), and has 25 years of journalistic experience and documentary appearances. A graduate of Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, Griffin is pursuing his MBA at California State University Los Angeles.

Tarzan’s extended family is surprised by his invitation to come visit his great African estate. But, only the two Tarzan Twins are able to come. Who are these twins?

The Tarzan Twins were born on the same day, and although they are not as “alike as two peas in a pod,” they still resemble one another closely enough to fulfil the requirements of “twinship.” Dick has a shock of black hair, while Doc’s hair is the sunny hue of molasses candy. And, their noses, blue eyes, and facial features are alike.

But in one respect they shatter every rule that has been laid down for twins from the very beginning of time. Dick (whose father was a distant relative of Lord Greystoke) was born in England and Doc in America – and without a doubt, they are not twins at all. Dick and Doc’s mothers are sisters – twin sisters – and so their offspring resemble each other. As teenagers the boys went to the same school and became the closest of cousins, and when their Tarzan relationship was disclosed, they were thereafter known as The Tarzan Twins.

As excitement grew with their impending trip to Africa, their scholastic standing suffered greatly as they turned to athletic workouts in preparation for the trip. But what they could not anticipate was that a train wreck in Africa would interfere with Tarzan meeting them at the train station or that they would become lost in the great jungle that is Africa. They also could not anticipate that they would be captured by an African tribe, nor that their adolescent lives could be extinguished then and there. And when captured, what then? Quick extinguishment or escape and rescue by Tarzan?

ARTIST Artguello

Carlos Manuel Argüello Süllow was born on September 24, 1958 in Fernando de la Mora, Paraguay: South America.

Carlos started drawing at a young age and has since discovered his current passion: painting. Self-taught, he gained experience at international workshops and international artist conventions (Buenos Aires, San Pablo, New York, Philadelphia, Virginia, New Jersey, San Diego) where he has participated since 1979, as well as many expositions and international conferences with well-known experts in the field like Jose Luis Garcia Lopez, Boris Vallejo and many others. He has received prizes and special notices in various competitions.

Carlos is also the founder and director of the renowned art institution, Art Studium, dedicated to teaching several art fields including Graphic Design & Advertising, Illustration, Decoration, Technical Drawing and Fashion Design. He has also authored educational materials.

A pioneer in the field of comics and illustration in Paraguay, Carlos published the first adventure comic with historic content: “Avaré Guarani Priest-warrior,” in the newspaper Ultima Hora in 1978. Another initiative dedicated to the comic field were: “Quimera,” “Avaré 2000,” “Bunker” and “Poha Ro’ysa.” Carlos won a contest in which one of his works was selected among more than 100 artists in the world to be published in a book by the Publisher, Trinquette.

Carlos’ latest work for the international comic industry was “Jungle Tales of Tarzan,” an edition published by Dark Horse for the centenary of Tarzan. Carlos was selected among many other artists to contribute drawings for a hardcover comic book which was launched at Comic Con in San Diego in 2015.

I grew up on the Tarzan movies and, to a lesser extent, the comics. But I became hooked on the real Tarzan in high school after picking up a new Ace paperback edition of Tarzan and the Lost Empire for fifty cents, the one with the Frank Frazetta cover of our hero, monkey on his back, hanging from a limb on a cliff and looking down upon the Roman city. I went on to collect the entire series of Ace and Ballantine paperback reissues of Burroughs’ tales (and still have them). I discovered that Burroughs’ stories were quite unlike the family-friendly Tarzan of the movies, with inarticulate Johnny Weismuller as the hulking hero living for some reason in the jungle with a classy, aristocratic Jane. No, Burroughs’ hero was a British lord who spoke educated English and had a fascinating backstory.
I was impressed with the far superior level of development and action found in these tales. I attempted writing my first Tarzan tale in 2005 (Tarzan and the “Fountain of Youth”) as something of a lark, and then followed it, to date, with six more Tarzan tales. Friends encouraged me to try to get the stories published. I am grateful to Jim Sullos of ERB, Inc., for giving me the chance. Here are my first three. In these stories, I have tried to craft realistic, page-turning adventure tales featuring classic Tarzan elements while at the same time taking the character in directions that have never been done in Tarzan stories before.
