Gorilla Shot Dead at Cincinnati Zoo After Child Climbs in Enclosure

A 17-year-old gorilla was shot dead Saturday by a Cincinnati Zoo employee who feared the animal would harm a child who had climbed into its enclosure, according to officials.

The 4-year-old boy climbed under a railing and through wires and fell about 10 feet into the enclosure at about 4 p.m., said Cincinnati Zoo director Thayne Maynard.

First responders “witnessed a gorilla who was violently dragging and throwing the child,” Cincinnati Fire Department Chief Marc Monahan wrote in a statement.

Baby elephants love to play and this little elephant, Faa Mai certainly has a reason to kick back and enjoy herself because she lives at Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Elephants are greatly threatened by poachers and the tourism industry in Thailand, so while it is unfortunate that Faa Mai can’t live freely out in the wild, residing in the safe bounds of this amazing animal sanctuary is a pretty close second. The elephants of Elephant Nature Park are all rescued animals, either orphaned or in need of other care, but at the sanctuary they are able to form their own family herd and enjoy each other’s company. Poachers destroyed this rhino’s face. Veterinarians are trying to fix it.

Poachers had entered the reserve in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province, sedated the female with a dart tranquilizer, and hacked off her horns and part of the skull under them. When the reserve’s owners found the rhino days later, news reports said, the gruesome hole in her face was riddled with maggots. But she was alive.

Last week, the rhino — who has since been dubbed Hope — underwent facial reconstruction surgery intended to close up that wound. It was the sixth major surgery she has had since her horns were cut off, according to the Independent Online, and it’s unclear whether it will work.

Elephant poachers kill rangers, wound Swedish park manager in Congo

ElephantsDAKAR (Reuters) – Elephant poachers killed three rangers in Democratic Republic of Congo’s Garamba wildlife park and wounded two other people including the Swedish park manager, environmental officials said.

One of the rangers was found dead near the site of the Saturday attack, said African Parks, which manages the UNESCO world heritage site.

Endangered Rhinos offered new Sanctuary by TexansPoachers shot dead a rhinoceros at a wildlife park in northeast India hours after Britain’s Prince William and his wife Kate visited the sanctuary, a wildlife official said Friday.

Rangers found the dead rhino with its horn missing on Thursday — the day the royal couple left the Kaziranga National Park in Assam state, home to two-thirds of the planet’s remaining one-horned rhinos.

The nonprofit Tansy Aspinall was launched among the gorillas at Howletts Wild Animal Park in Kent, England. One little girl helped with everyday activities in the family’s charity, The Aspinall Foundation, working to rehabilitate gorillas who had been in captivity. The nonprofit organization’s goal is to be able to release the gorillas back into their native habitat in West Africa.
