The Moon Maid: The Centennial Edition is now available and ready to ship immediately from ERB Books!

Richard Lupoff called The Moon Maid trilogy Burroughs’ “masterpiece of science fiction.” You are invited to order this very special edition of The Moon Maid, published for the first time in hardback in three separate volumes with 20,000 words not found in the 1926 A. C. McClurg first edition.

Each book in the set is printed on archival paper, Symth sewn, bound in a leather cover, double stamped in gold, and wrapped in an original dust jacket. The set is housed, with a collector’s portfolio, in a decorated leather clamshell case. The three volumes are:

Volume 1: The Moon Maid™ 
Volume 2: The Moon Men™
Volume 3: The Red Hawk™

The edition is limited to 600 numbered and 52 lettered sets signed by the contributors. It is the fourth matching set in the “New World” series launched by ERB Books in 2020 with A Princess of Mars®—each of which celebrates the first appearance of one of ERB’s newly created realms filled with fantastic kingdoms, cultures, and creatures. This trilogy set commemorates both the first publication of The Moon Maid in Argosy All-Story Weekly in 1923 and the 100th Anniversary of Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc.

Each volume in the set is unique with its own book cover design, illustrated endpapers, frontispiece and title pages. The Moon Maid trilogy will feature a total of 100 illustrations from over 20 different artists past and present and contain 20+ tipped in color plates, 30+ full page b&w illustrations and 40+ spot b&w illustrations.

The case not only houses the books but a vintage-style collector’s portfolio with rare, curated replica items for The Moon Maid. These include the first pages of the manuscripts for each novella in the trilogy, pages and drawings from ERB’s notebook, letters and a telegram between ERB and his editor, 1920’s ERB Inc. advertising and numerous 11×17 reproductions of some of the best pieces of art from the book.

Wolf Larson Joins ERB, Inc. to Head ERB Entertainment and
Christopher Paul Carey Promoted to Vice President of Publishing

Tarzana, CA (January 9, 2024) Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. (ERB, Inc.), the company that manages and licenses the creative works of novelist Edgar Rice Burroughs, including Tarzan of the Apes® and John Carter of Mars®, is pleased to announce changes to its executive structure in the areas of entertainment and publishing, effective December 23, 2023.

Wolf Larson, Vice President of ERB Entertainment

Wolf Larson is a writer, a producer, and an actor. He graduated with a BA (Hons) in Economics and Statistics from Queens University and received his MBA in Finance and Marketing from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. After graduating, he stayed on at UNLV as a Lecturer in Finance and to work as the Assistant Director at the Center for Business and Economic Research. He moved to Los Angeles and started a calendar and video production company, and shortly thereafter a series of circumstances led to Mr. Larson finding himself in the role as Edgar Rice Burroughs’ legendary ape-man in the Tarzan television series from 1991–1994. The series ran for three seasons with seventy-five episodes.

After his role as Tarzan, he went on to star in TNT’s LA Heat as Detective Chase McDonald. He also had acting roles in Storm Chasers (1998) and in Shakedown (2002). He was a writer and producer for Crash and Byrnes (2000), where he also had a leading role, as well as Just Can’t Get Enough (2002). More recently, he was the CEO of a financial services company but has remained involved in the entertainment industry.

As of December 2023, he has accepted the position of Vice President of ERB Entertainment, the new entertainment division of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., in Tarzana, CA. It will be Mr. Larson’s role to bring these wide-ranging literary creations to market in motion pictures and television series.

Christopher Paul Carey, Vice President of Publishing

Christopher Paul Carey holds a master’s degree in Writing Popular Fiction from Seton Hill University. He was integral to the success of Paizo Inc., publisher of the bestselling Pathfinder and Starfinder roleplaying games, where for a decade he was Senior Editor and worked on the RPG line of gaming books and products, as well as the Pathfinder Tales and Planet Stories fiction imprints. Mr. Carey has edited the works of both classic and contemporary science fiction and fantasy authors, including more than ninety novels, anthologies, and collections for a variety of presses. He is the critically acclaimed author of six novels and standalone novellas, a nonfiction collection, and numerous short stories and comic book scripts, including several authorized works set in the worlds of Edgar Rice Burroughs.

As of February 2024, Mr. Carey will celebrate his fifth anniversary with Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., where has served as Director of Publishing. Now he has been promoted to the position of Vice President of Publishing. Mr. Carey has overseen the rebirth of the company’s publishing program and has implemented several key initiatives that have generated much attention and success for ERB, Inc.’s publications. These include the Edgar Rice Burroughs Authorized Library, a monumental series presenting the complete literary works of the Master of Adventure in uniform hardcover editions, supplemented by forewords and afterwords by renowned authorities and luminaries, and bonus materials mined from the company’s extensive archives in Tarzana, California. He also serves as Creative Director of the Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe, a groundbreaking series of novels, short fiction, comic books, and graphic novels by today’s talented authors and creatives, all faithfully expanding on the celebrated canon of Edgar Rice Burroughs and set within the same continuity.

Looking Back at a Historic Year—and Ahead to the Year of Mars!

As many of you know, 2023 has been a year of special significance for our company, as Mr. Burroughs founded and incorporated Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., 100 years ago to protect, preserve, and manage his literary and creative legacy. We are both humbled and honored to be here a century later continuing to bring Mr. Burroughs’ works and vision to the world, none of which would be possible without each and every reader of his tales of fantasy and romance, and all the fans worldwide of his unrivaled universe of exotic worlds and intrepid heroes.

In March of this past year, we commemorated the corporation’s hundredth anniversary with a Centennial Open House event at the historic offices in Tarzana, California, where Edgar Rice Burroughs managed his business and wrote many of his classic tales. The event was attended by many fans and friends of the company.

As part of the festivities, as well as for those who could not attend the event, we prepared a video to celebrate the past century of Edgar Rice Burroughs, which you may watch below. Onward to the Year of Mars, and More!

 

ERB Authorized Library Update

One major achievement of this past year was wrapping up production on Tarzan volumes #21–24 in the Edgar Rice Burroughs Authorized Library. For the first time in decades, all 24 volumes of the original adult Tarzan books will soon be back in print. Since our printer slowed down its output over the holidays, we are now expecting the books to begin shipping sometime in January 2024. It won’t be long now!

So, you might ask, what’s next? Mars, of course! Specifically, what we have begun calling the Year of Mars, with multiple Barsoom titles to be released in 2024. We are already well underway on the production of Barsoom volumes #1–3. The texts of the three novels are being proofread, the new front and back matter is being written, and artist Joe Jusko is hard at work creating a new set of stunning and iconic cover paintings and frontispieces destined to stand the test of time alongside more than a century’s worth of imaginative visualizations of ERB’s Barsoom.

With rising printing and production costs, we’ve decided to make it a little less painful for your pocketbook by releasing smaller sets of ERB Authorized Library volumes at a time, which will also allow us publish sets at a faster rate and get them into your hands sooner. So the first Barsoom set will include the classic three-book John Carter of Mars trilogy—A Princess of Mars, The Gods of Mars, and The Warlord of Mars—which we hope to put up for preorder this Spring. Then, a few short months later, after the first set has shipped to customers, we’ll switch to releasing two-book sets, with the next set to go up for preorder consisting of Thuvia, Maid of Mars and The Chessmen of Mars. And then presales for another two-book set will be announced only a few months later, and so on. This should help cut down on the time between preorder announcements and shipping the final product to customers—something we think we can all get behind, since we are as eager to release these timeless tales of adventure and romance as we know you are eager to read them!

Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe Update

Continuing with the Year of Mars, we are thrilled to be publishing the first novel to feature everyone’s favorite incomparable princess in the lead role—Dejah Thoris! A Princess of Mars: Shadow of the Assassins by Ann Tonsor Zeddies (author of Deathgift, Steel Helix, and Blood and Roses: A Jayne Taylor Novel, as well as the ERB Universe novelette “Victory Harben: Stormwinds of Va-nah”) turned in her novel earlier this year and has been waiting patiently for it to advance in the publishing cue. Well, the time is almost nigh! As soon as the cover art is finished, we’ll be putting the book up for preorder. As a bonus, the back pages of A Princess of Mars: Shadow of the Assassins will feature a brand-new novelette, “John Carter of Mars: Swords of the Mind” by fan-favorite author Geary Gravel (John Carter of Mars: Gods of the Forgotten).

While 2024 is the Year of Mars, it’s also the 100th anniversary of the book publication of The Land That Time Forgot and the 50th anniversary of the 1974 film of the same name directed by Kevin Connor and starring Doug McClure. To commemorate these occasions, we have commissioned a new Caspak novel to be written titled The Land That Time Forgot: Fortress Primeval. The author of the novel will be Mike Wolfer, whom ERB fans will know from the quality work he’s done on a host of Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe comic books and graphic novels, as well as for writing the prose novelettes “Victory Harben: Clash on Caspak” and “Beyond the Farthest Star: Escape on Zandar.”

We are also extremely excited to bring author Joshua Reynolds on board the ERB Universe team to write a direct sequel to The Monster Men, Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic horror novel exploring the spine-tingling question of what it really means to be human. Josh has written more than 30 novels and numerous works of short fiction for properties such as Warhammer, Legend of the Five Rings, Mack Bolan: The Executioner, and Arkham Horror, in addition to penning his own excellent 1920s pulp-inspired Casefiles of the Royal Occultist series. We don’t yet have a release date for Return of the Monster Men, so it’s possible this one may slip onto the 2025 release schedule, but we wanted to let you know that the Monster Men are coming! And just to make sure everyone’s caught up on the story, we plan to release Return of the Monster Men simultaneously with a special Vintage Cover Art Edition of ERB’s original The Monster Men novel. Stay tuned!

Additionally, we’re happy to report that Win Scott Eckert’s upcoming novel, Korak at the Earth’s Core, Book One of The Dead Moon Super-Arc, is still on track for an early 2024 release. Win, of course, is the author of the very popular ERB Universe novel Tarzan: Battle for Pellucidar, so you’re not going to want to miss this first book in this brand-new Super-Arc.  Korak at the Earth’s Core will be followed by Pellucidar: Land of Awful Shadow  (Book Two in the Dead Moon Super-Arc trilogy) by Win Scott Eckert, so make sure you are signed up for the official Edgar Rice Burroughs Newsletter to be notified of the preorder announcement for next chapter in the saga.

Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe Illustrated Epics Update

Last year saw the publication of the ERB Universe prose novel Victory Harben: Fires of Halos by Christopher Paul Carey, featuring wayward scientist and adventurer Victory Harben, who finds herself unwittingly transported to the Omos planetary system from Edgar Rice Burroughs’ novel Beyond the Farthest Star (among other destinations in the spacetime continuum). We are proud to be presenting the next chapter in Victory’s far-flung exploits very soon, this time in the form of the full-length graphic novel Victory Harben: Ghosts of Omos, written by Mike Wolfer and illustrated by Alessandro Ranaldi, with colors by Arthur Hesli and lettering by Natalie Jane. But that’s not all. Alongside Ghosts of Omos, we will also be releasing a trade paperback titled Victory Harben: Warriors of Zandar, which will collect all four issues of the critically acclaimed Beyond the Farthest Star: Warriors of Zandar mini-series. The campaign for both graphic novels will launch on Kickstarter early in the New Year, and will include exclusive Kickstarter rewards that you’ll truly have to see to believe! (Hmmm…handcrafted Hucklebuck plushies, anyone…?)

Oh, we almost forgot… Another reason you might want to check out Victory Harben: Ghosts of Omos is because, in addition to being a satisfying standalone story, it just happens to be the lead-in to the upcoming, yet-to-be announced Victory Harben prose novel by Christopher Paul Carey. (Wait…did we just announce it…? More details on that later!)

And closing out the Year of Mars, we have Gauntlets of Mars: A Novel of Barsoom, the stunning sequel to Chris L Adams acclaimed novel Dark Tides of Mars. The latter story ended on something of a cliffhanger for protagonist Dat Voga, so we are all waiting with bated breath to find out what will happen in the next chapter of our hero’s amazing odyssey. We’ll also get answers to some intriguing questions about the mysteries of Ancient Barsoom before the seas dried up and scavenging hordes of green Martians began roving the forlorn, moss-covered dead sea bottoms.

About the Authors

A lifelong Edgar Rice Burroughs reader, Win Scott Eckert is the author of the ERB Universe novel Tarzan: Battle for Pellucidar. He is also the authorized legacy author of science fiction Grand Master Philip José Farmer’s Patricia Wildman series (The Evil in Pemberley House, The Scarlet Jaguar), as well as the coauthor with Farmer of the fourth novel in the Secrets of the Nine series, the Doc Caliban novel The Monster on Hold. About the Cover Artist

E. M. Gist began his study of art with Jeff Watts in 1996. Three years later, Gist’s training developed into teaching where he is now one of the lead instructors at Watts Atelier of the Arts. Gist began his career as a professional artist in 1998, eventually transitioning into genre illustration, and he painted his first comic cover in 2007. The Tarzana International Film Festival Celebrates
the 100 Year Anniversaries of
Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. and Warner Bros.!

[TARZANA, CA] – The Tarzana International Film Festival (TZIFF) (to be held Sept. 29–Oct.1, 2023) announces a new partnership with Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. to honor their 100-year centennial. Opening night festivities will include the screening of the Tarzan documentary Tarzan: The Man Behind the Legend, followed by a Q&A with the director and cast. Edgar Rice Burroughs (ERB) is one of the most prolific and successful authors in the world, best known for creating Tarzan, John Carter of Mars, Carson of Venus, The Land That Time Forgot, and At The Earth’s Core to name a few.

In 1919, Edgar Rice Burroughs moved from Chicago to a 550-acre ranch in the San Fernando Valley to be close to Hollywood following the smash-hit success of Tarzan of the Apes starring Elmo Lincoln, the first film in history to gross over $1 million at the box office. The town where he settled was renamed Tarzana after his most beloved character. There have been 53 Tarzan movies and 7 different television series, and the new ERB Studios is poised to bring more of his literary creations to the screen. TZIFF will be honoring ERB with the first ever Edgar Rice Burroughs Legacy Award at the festival’s Closing Night Gala & Awards Show. Every year thereafter, the award will be presented to an iconic industry writer known for their work in the genres of science fiction, fantasy and adventure.

TZIFF will also be celebrating the Warner Bros. centennial with a screening of the feature film The Brothers Warner directed by Cass Warner Sperling, granddaughter of WB studio head Jack Warner. This award-winning documentary chronicles the creation and rise of the very first Hollywood studio, Warner Bros., in 1923.

Daytime activities on Saturday and Sunday consist of full-day screenings, with a “Night of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror” party held on Saturday night featuring a live band, picture car, velociraptor from Jurassic Park, and cosplayers. Sunday evening will conclude with the semiformal, red carpet Closing Night Gala and Awards Dinner at the exclusive Braemar Country Club in the hills overlooking the beautiful San Fernando Valley and Tarzana.

The Tarzana International Film Festival is excited to be returning to the Regal Cinemas at the Sherman Oaks Galleria for screenings and events. Chris spent years playing guitar in various bands and during that time was more of a voracious reader than a writer. After his last band collapsed, he turned from writing songs to writing stories, including Dark Tides of Mars and its forthcoming sequel.

In addition to writing, Chris also dabbles in painting; the cover art for his latest novel, A Savage from Atlantis, was created from one of his paintings. A Princess of Mars (1912)

Tarzan of the Apes (1912)

Orphaned as a babe in the African jungle, the only child of the Lord and Lady Greystoke is rescued by a tribe of great apes. Now named “Tarzan,” the child grows to manhood in this savage world. ERB’s A Princess of Mars has long been one of his all-time favorite books, and it is included in his award-winning anthology, The Prentice Hall Anthology of Science Fiction and Fantasy. The list of other Edgar Rice Burroughs tales he treasures and owns in first edition, original pulp magazine, and other states is too numerous to detail.

Christopher Paul Carey is the Director of Publishing and Creative Director of the ERB Universe at Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. Picking up where Jane Porter: The Primordial Peril left off and set in the year 1952, Jane is tasked with delivering three revived prehistoric creatures to the savage land of Pellucidar®, the world at the Earth’s core. With the help of the crew of the fantastic vacuum airship Favonia, Jane’s routine mission will take a terrifying turn when the Favonia encounters an incredible phenomenon that leads it not to Pellucidar, but to an alien world far from Earth and into a nightmare scenario that could spell doom for an entire planet!

100 Years Ago Today

Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., Celebrates Its Centennial

On this day one hundred years ago, Edgar Rice Burroughs founded his own company and became the first author to incorporate himself. Today Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., is still owned by his heirs; operates out of Tarzana, California, on the property of Mr. Burroughs’ former ranch; and is actively engaged in promoting his legacy and licensing the rights to his works of wonder and imagination.

Edgar Rice Burroughs is the true American success story. From the day he was born, in Chicago, on September 1, 1875, until he submitted one-half a novel to The All-Story Magazine in 1911, he failed in nearly every enterprise he tried. He became a cowboy in Idaho, a U.S. Cavalryman, a shopkeeper, a railroad policeman, a gold miner, and even an “expert accountant,” although he knew nothing of the profession. Throughout this period, he somehow raised money for a number of his own businesses, all of which sank without a trace.

Life was dismal for Burroughs and his wife Emma. He became depressed, his wife discouraged. Perhaps to escape from the grim reality of his own life, or perhaps to amuse Emma, he would often sketch darkly humorous cartoons or write fantastic fairy tales of other worlds.

Much later, he was to confirm the fact that he wrote all his stories, particularly those of other worlds, as much for his own enjoyment as for that of his readers: “In all these years, I have not learned one single rule of writing fiction. I still write as I did thirty years ago; stories which I feel would entertain me and give me mental relaxation, knowing there are millions of people just like me who will like the same things I like. Anyway, I have great fun with my imaginings, and I can appreciate—in a small way—the swell time God had in creating the Universe.”

By 1911, Burroughs’ position had become so desperate that not even his cartoons and stories could block out the frustrating fact of his successive failures. He hardly knew where to turn next. Finally, he reached rock bottom. He was thirty-five years old, without a job, without money. There was a wife and two children to support, and a third child was expected soon. He could buy food and coal only by pawning his watch and Emma’s jewelry.

“Then,” he tells us, “somehow I got hold of a few dollars and took an agency for the sale of a lead-pencil sharpener. I would not try to sell the sharpeners myself, but I advertised for agents and sent them out. They did not sell any pencil sharpeners, but in leisure moments, while I was waiting for them to come back to tell me that they had not sold any, I started writing ‘Under the Moons of Mars,’ my first story

“I had no idea how to submit a story or what I could expect in payment. Had I known anything about it at all, I would never have thought of submitting half a novel, but that is what I did. Thomas Newell Metcalf, then editor of The All-Story Magazine, published by The Frank A. Munsey Co., wrote me that he liked the first half of the story and if the second was as good he thought he might use it. Had he not given me this encouragement, I would never have finished the story and my writing career would have been at an end, since I was not writing because of any urge to write nor for any particular love of writing. I was writing because I had a wife and two babies, a combination of which does not work well without money.

“I finished the second half of the story and got $400 for first magazine serial rights. The check was the first big event in my life. No amount of money could possibly give me the thrill that this first $400 check gave me.”

Today, the story is acclaimed by scholars as the turning point of twentieth-century science fiction, and new editions of it continue to be published each year throughout the world.

But Burroughs was still a long way from becoming an established writer. His next literary effort, a historical novel set in the England of the Plantagenet kings, was rejected. He nearly gave up, but his publisher would not hear of it. “Try again,” he urged. “Stick with the ‘damphool’ stuff.”

He did, and with his next novel, the future was decided forever. The novel was Tarzan of the Apes. An astonishing success on its appearance in The All-Story magazine in 1912, Tarzan of the Apes brought Edgar Rice Burroughs a mere $700, but after being rejected by practically every major book publisher in the country, it was finally published by A. C. McClurg and Co., and became a 1914 best-seller.

A torrent of novels followed; stories about Mars, Venus, Apaches, Westerns, social commentaries, detective stories, tales of the Moon and of the hollow Earth—and more and more Tarzan books. By the time his pen was stilled, nearly 100 stories bore Edgar Rice Burroughs’ name.

In 1918, Tarzan came to the screen with Tarzan of the Apes, starring Elmo Lincoln, one of the first films in history to gross over one million dollars. Since then, 53 Tarzan films and 250 television episodes have been produced, each a great financial success.

In 1919, with financial security assured, Burroughs moved to California, where he purchased the 550-acre estate of General Harrison Gray Otis, renaming it “Tarzana Ranch.”

By 1923, the city of Los Angeles had completely surrounded Tarzana Ranch, and Burroughs sold a portion of it for homesites. In 1930, a post office was established in the community, and the three hundred residents held a contest to find a name for the new community. The winning entry was “Tarzana.” Today, Tarzana has its own park, library, freeway, banking facilities, medical buildings, country clubs, and a bright future.

In 1923, Edgar Rice Burroughs became the first author to incorporate himself. By the mid-1930s, he was “big business.” Daily and Sunday comic strips appeared in over 250 newspapers all over the world; a Tarzan radio serial thrilled its listeners across the country, with Burroughs’ daughter, Joan, in the role of Jane, and her husband, James H. Pierce, as Tarzan.

Today, Tarzan television programs and films are shown on an array of different networks all over the world. A Tarzan movie plays somewhere in the world every day. With the contemporary emphasis on outer space, Burroughs’ science fiction writings are still treasured to this day.

Most importantly, he is at last receiving the critical acclaim he was denied in his lifetime. No longer is Tarzan of the Apes considered mere entertainment, and neither are Burroughs’ wild imaginings among the stars; they have become subjects for scholars and an inspiration to a new generation of writers of imaginative fiction.

He is remembered a modest man who never took himself or anything else too seriously. His friends have recalled his ready sense of humor, his great love of the outdoors, and his unbound pride in his country.

In December 7, 1941, Burroughs was a witness to the attack on Pearl Harbor, and in 1942 he became America’s oldest war correspondent, covering stories with the Pacific Fleet for United Press. He returned home from the South Pacific only after suffering a series of heart attacks. Ironically, he was unable to find a suitable home in Tarzana, and he spent his remaining years in a modest house in nearby Encino.

It was there, on March 19, 1950, that Edgar Rice Burroughs set down his pen for the last time.
