Cover art by Joe Jusko

Tuesday, November 25, 2025 (Tarzana, California) Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., the company founded by the creator of Tarzan of the Apes® and John Carter of Mars®, is pleased to announce preorders for volumes 6, 7, and 8 in the Edgar Rice Burroughs’ original Barsoom® Saga in handsome ERB Authorized Library editions, sporting brand-new epic cover art and interior frontispieces by legendary artist Joe Jusko. For a limited time, preorder the standard hardcover editions of all three books together and get 20% off, or preorder the new Joe Jusko Legend Editions (see below for more details) from the individual product pages for The Master Mind of Mars, A Fighting Man of Mars, and Swords of Mars. (Please note: The “Buy All 3 Books and Get 20% Off” sale does not apply to the Joe Jusko Legend Editions.)

These stunning hardcover editions feature gorgeous new cover art and frontispieces by Joe Jusko; forewords by award-winning scholar and editor Garyn G. Roberts (The Prentice Hall Anthology of Science Fiction), New York Times best-selling author David Weber (the Honor Harrington series), and screenwriter and author Michael Kogge (John Carter of Mars: The Audio Series, Star Wars); afterwords by noted ERB scholar Henry G. Franke III; and a bounty of rare and previously unpublished bonus materials from our archives in Tarzana, California.

In The Master Mind of Mars, Captain Ulysses Paxton finds himself reborn on Barsoom after suffering an awful fate in the trenches of World War I. Renamed Vad Varo, he is employed as bodyguard and assistant to Ras Thavas, a scientific genius devoid of a moral compass who has learned the gruesome art of transplanting brains and organs from one living being to another, whether human or otherwise. When an old and wicked crone exchanges bodies with the fair Valla Dia, Vad Varo must revive a frightful crew of lab specimens to help him correct the heinous wrong—or die in the attempt!

A Fighting Man of Mars finds lowly padwar Tan Hadron of Helium cruelly rejected by the beautiful, noble-born Sanoma Tora, a result of his low rank and social standing. But when the woman who has spurned him is kidnapped, Tan Hadron sets out selflessly to pursue her abductors to the very ends of Barsoom. To achieve his goal, he must confront dangers as daunting as any faced by the revered John Carter, Warlord of Mars, for both the mighty Jeddak of Jahar and a madman with the ultimate superweapon stand in his way.

A new threat has arisen upon Barsoom in Swords of Mars—the powerful assassins’ guild of Zodanga, capable of toppling entire governments with the stroke of a sword. Now John Carter, Warlord of Mars, seeks to infiltrate the guild’s corrupt den in disguise. When fate places him in the employ of one of the guild’s targets, he finds himself in a perilous game of betrayal and murder between two cold-hearted, rival inventors. But the power-hungry scientists may prove to be the real threat, as their ambition has led to the abduction of Dejah Thoris, who has been stolen away to Thuria—Barsoom’s nearer moon!

Volumes 6, 7, and 8 of the Barsoom Saga are expected to ship Spring 2026.

Preorder Trailblazer: The Autobiography of Tarzan’s Creator
plus ERB’s 150th Birthday Sale!

Cover art by John Coleman Burroughs
Design by Mike Wolfer

September 1, 2025 (Tarzana, California) – In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Edgar Rice Burroughs, who was born on this day in 1875, we are thrilled to announce the upcoming publication of Trailblazer: The Autobiography of Tarzan’s Creator. The 20,000-word “Autobiography,” dictated by Burroughs at the prompting of his book publisher in 1929 for the purposes of promotion, has never before seen print and details in his own words the life of the Master of Adventure from his birth to 1914. A compelling, insightful, and often humorous and self-deprecating account of the man who singlehandedly transformed popular culture with his iconic creations, Trailblazer is the true American success story. Burroughs writes of his days as a schoolboy in Chicago and a cowboy in Idaho; his trials and triumphs as a cadet in the Michigan Military Academy; his service in the 7th U.S. Cavalry chasing the notorious outlaw the Apache Kid in the mountains of the Arizona Territory; and his struggles as a young husband, father, and failed businessman. The “Autobiography” concludes with Edgar Rice Burroughs’ ultimate achievement: the creation of the immortal Tarzan of the Apes and John Carter of Mars, the beloved heroes of his tales of adventure and romance that forever imprinted his presence on global culture.

Trailblazer sheds light on Edgar Rice Burroughs the Man, showing both his doubts and his courage in the face of adversity. Moreover, it counters oft-told and misleading narratives about his views on race, illustrating his sympathetic feelings and respect for the Indigenous peoples he encountered in the American Southwest, and his high opinion of a regiment of Black soldiers quartered at Fort Grant, Arizona, beside and under whom he served while in the cavalry.

Supplementing the “Autobiography” is a 20,000-word profile of the author by noted ERB scholar Henry G. Franke III, picking up where Burroughs’ firsthand account leaves off and covering the remainder of his life and career. Here we see Burroughs metamorphose from a budding author into a successful entrepreneur who launched a worldwide industry of Tarzan film, radio, publishing, licensing, and merchandising, all while he continued to write his highly popular novels. Franke also details how Burroughs could not refuse the call to duty after witnessing firsthand the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, risking the dangers of Pacific Theater as the oldest accredited war correspondent in World War II.

Trailblazer is rounded out by 17 essays by Edgar Rice Burroughs on his extraordinary life and groundbreaking career, including 4 previously unpublished travelogues written with all his trademark wit, humor, and engaging literary style: “The Mono Creek Trip,” “Notes on the Trip to Mono Creek and Porpoise Lake,” “The Eleven-Year Itch,” and “The Death Valley Expedition of the Intrepid Thirty-Threeers.” The book also features copious rare photographs and illustrations from ERB, Inc.’s archives in Tarzana, California, and includes heartfelt forewords by two of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ great-granddaughters, Kathleen Bonnaud and Llana Jane Burroughs, as well as an illuminating introduction by Henry G. Franke III.

Trailblazer: The Autobiography of Tarzan’s Creator offers a rare glimpse into the mind of one of the world’s most popular and beloved authors, and will be enjoyed by fans of his fantastical tales, students of literature and history, and anyone interested in reading the captivating life story of a unique and creative soul.

Available in paperback, standard hardcover, and a hardcover limited Collector’s Edition. Expected to ship Winter 2025/2026.

Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., Announces
John Carter, Warlord of Mars Animated Series

Monday, July 21, 2025 (Tarzana, CA) – Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., representing the estate of the iconic author behind Tarzan® and John Carter of Mars®, is developing an animated series based on the John Carter of Mars novels.

Michael Kogge, who is writing and directing John Carter of Mars: The Audio Series and whose other credits include projects for Lucasfilm (Star Wars), Disney Interactive, Playtone, and Warner Bros., has been tapped to develop the series. Jim Sullos and Wolf Larson will oversee for Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc.

Edgar Rice Burroughs originated the story of John Carter of Mars in his first novel, A Princess of Mars, over 100 years ago. In 1936, legendary animator Bob Clampett (Looney Tunes) and Burroughs’ son, John Coleman Burroughs, created a test reel to pitch a series of nine-minute animated John Carter shorts to MGM that never came to fruition. This series would be the first time John Carter of Mars has been fully realized in animation.

“In this era of incredible animation, with shows like Castlevania, Blood of Zeus, and Twilight of the Gods pushing the genre of fantasy action-adventure to new heights, there couldn’t be a better time for the Martian saga of John Carter and Princess Dejah Thoris to be told through bold, ground-breaking animation,” Kogge said.

“We’re thrilled to endorse Michael Kogge’s inspired vision for our John Carter animated series, driven by his exceptional direction of John Carter of Mars: The Audio Series,” said Wolf Larson, head of the entertainment division of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. “Edgar Rice Burroughs’ eleven John Carter novels, combined with the countless comics and authorized stories by other authors, offer a vast tapestry that has inspired cinematic giants like George Lucas and James Cameron. With animation’s soaring popularity, we’re ready to unleash the boundless wonders of Mars in a thrilling epic that will enthrall both loyal fans and new explorers alike.”

“The explosive rise of action-adventure animation has captivated audiences around the world, making it the perfect moment to launch our John Carter animated series. This marks a new era in storytelling for the Edgar Rice Burroughs universe and we’re excited that Michael Kogge will help bring Mars to life,” added Jim Sullos, President of ERB, Inc.

More will be revealed at 2025’s San Diego Comic Con during the Edgar Rice Burroughs panel on Friday, July 25th, 2025 at 4 p.m. in room 32AB at the San Diego Convention Center.

Although Mr. Burroughs is best known for creating his world-famous ape-man, he launched his renowned writing career with the serialization of “Under the Moons of Mars” in the pages of The All-Story magazine from February–July 1912, and many fans of his books consider the Barsoom series to be among his finest and most enduring works. “Under the Moons of Mars” was first published in hardcover in 1917 by A. C. McClurg & Co. under the title A Princess of Mars, and was followed by The Gods of Mars and The Warlord of Mars, both of which first appeared in The All-Story in 1913–14. The three novels make up one of the most highly influential and celebrated trilogies in the history of science fiction, and have left a permanent stamp on popular culture, influencing and inspiring the most prominent figures around the world, including Ray Bradbury, Carl Sagan, Jerry Seigel, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, and James Cameron, to name just a few. In the words of Ray Bradbury, “Burroughs is probably the most influential writer in the entire history of the world.” Without Edgar Rice Burroughs’ John Carter of Mars, it is doubtful that Superman, Star Wars, or Avatar would exist for audiences to enjoy, at least not in their recognizable forms.

These stunning hardcover editions feature gorgeous new cover art and frontispieces by Joe Jusko; forewords by venerated fantasy author and SFWA Grand Master Michael Moorcock (Elric, Hawkmoon, The Eternal Champion), bestselling science fiction and fantasy author Kevin J. Anderson (Dune, Star Wars, The X-Files), and NASA astronaut Terrence W. Wilcutt (veteran of four Space Shuttle missions); afterwords by noted ERB scholar Henry G. Franke III; and a bounty of rare and previously unpublished archival materials.

The first three volumes of the Barsoom Saga are expected to ship Fall 2024.

Born to an ancient line of noble and courageous forebears, Dejah Thoris, young and headstrong princess of the mighty empire of Helium, longs for a life of excitement and purpose beyond the cloistered walls of her royal palace. When a foreign ambassador arrives with an invitation to visit his city-state in hopes of fostering diplomatic relations, the princess defies the protests of her father and jed, traveling to the shadowy metropolis of Zor as Helium’s emissary. But Dejah Thoris soon finds that her hosts are not like the gallant folk of Helium, and before she knows it, their nefarious machinations ensnare her in a tangled web of artifice, perfidy, and murder—and a treacherous plot that portends tragedy not only for her own family, but for the entire Heliumetic empire.
