American Mythology Announces “CARSON OF VENUS®: THE EYE OF AMTOR,” Prequel Miniseries to New ERB Universe Novels

Cover art for Carson of Venus: Eye of Amtor #1–3 by Vincenzo Carratu

Tarzana, CA (September 24, 2019) – During an exciting 2019 San Diego Comic Con panel presentation, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., announced plans for a groundbreaking, canonical, multi-novel “super-arc” that will expand upon and continue the legacy of the iconic sci-fi writer’s greatest works. Just as exciting is the news that American Mythology Productions is partnering with ERB, Inc., to create new comics that will be directly tied to the new novels.

The first novel in the newly unveiled Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe series will be author Matt Betts’ Carson of Venus: The Edge of All Worlds. Preceding the novel’s release, American Mythology will publish a three-issue, comic book prequel to the novel, titled “Carson of Venus: The Eye of Amtor.” Hitting store shelves in December–April of 2020, “The Eye of Amtor” will not be the traditional, comics adaptation of Edge that readers might be expecting. Rather, “The Eye of Amtor” is an all-new, self-contained adventure that takes place just prior to the events of Edge of All Worlds. “Eye” will be written by Mike Wolfer, from a story by Matt Betts.

“When I heard the plan for new, ERB Universe novels,” says American Mythology Editor in Chief Mike Wolfer, “I knew that as the comics licensor of Burroughs’ The Land That Time Forgot, Pellucidar, Carson of Venus, The Moon Maid, and most recently The Monster Men, AM was in a unique position to offer Burroughs’ fans not just new adventures, but new ways of delivering those stories. Since we have the comics license for Carson of Venus, I discussed the idea of a creative partnership with ERB, Inc. Director of Publishing Christopher Paul Carey, who is overseeing the ERB Universe novel series. We decided on doing a new Carson miniseries that would coincide with the release of the new novel. But I didn’t want to do an adaptation; I wanted the series to be unique, new material, and stand on its own. What we’re going to do is show the adventure that takes place just prior to the beginning of The Edge of All Worlds, the adventure that leads into the events of the novel, but it’s a story that stands on its own. You don’t have to read “Eye” in order to understand Edge. But if you read them both, you’ll find that it’s one seamless story. I don’t know if that’s been done before, but it will reinforce in the minds of ERB and comics fans that this AM comic is absolutely canon, as we blur the lines between the two mediums and bring them together into a multifaceted, entertainment experience.”

Beyond the new Carson story, there’s even more excitement in store for readers in the pages of “The Eye of Amtor.” A special, back-up story written by Christopher Paul Carey will tell a three-part tale starring Jason Gridley, who figures prominently throughout ERB, Inc.’s multi-novel “super-arc.” Beginning in Pellucidar, the savage world at the Earth’s core, the action-packed, bonus Gridley tale will also introduce Victory Harben, an all-new character who will have her very own novel in the ERB “super-arc.” Victory Harben: Fires of Halos will be written by Carey and the fourth novel in the “super-arc.” Stay tuned to ERB, Inc.’s What’s New page for the historic unveiling of the “Eye of Amtor” variant cover featuring the world’s first look at Victory Harben, coming on October 1. Without a doubt, now is an incredibly exciting time to be a fan of Edgar Rice Burroughs, a fan of comics, and a fan of science-fiction adventure!

Beyond the Farthest Star Comic Strip Launch

Enjoy this comic strip based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs story

A sci-fi thriller, Beyond the Farthest Star tells of a World War II fighter pilot who is shot down in battle and propelled across the vast reaches of space to an unimaginably distant solar system, where he awakens on the strange world of Poloda. Tangor was the name the people of Poloda gave him. His American name he preferred not to reveal, for his family on Earth thought him dead, a hero shot down while battling Nazi warplanes over Europe.

But Tangor was not dead. Instead, like John Carter, he found himself on the surface of another world—not Mars, but a far-flung planet inhabited by strange beasts, alien peoples, and an advanced martial civilization beset by treacherous political intrigue and ceaseless warfare. On Poloda, Tangor faces the greatest challenge of his life, for there, as on Earth, war is so vast, so entrenched, that it has become a way of life. And unless Tangor can find a way to infiltrate his adopted people’s hateful enemy and steal the plans for their latest military innovation, Poloda will be only the first world of the Omos System to fall to its doom..

Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote Beyond the Farthest Star in 1940 while he was living in Honolulu, shortly before he witnessed the attack on Pearl Harbor. Following America’s entry into the war, Burroughs became the nation’s oldest war correspondent, reporting from the Pacific Theater.

BEYOND THE FARTHEST STAR TEAM

WRITER, COLORING, and LETTERS Michael Tierney

Michael Tierney has over 1,000 published works of fiction and non-fiction. His most notable non-fiction work was the highly-acclaimed Edgar Rice Burroughs 100 Year Art Chronology. The fiction work he is best known for is his long-running science fiction opera: Wild Stars – which consists of novels, portfolios, and comic books. One of those comics he not only wrote, penciled, inked, and lettered, but also printed in his garage. It was the first comic to be foil stamped and have a die-cut cover, and remains the only comic to ever have a die-cut back cover. With Beyond the Farthest Star he accomplishes a personal first. This is his debut as a colorist.

Michael also serves on the City Council where he lives and has been known to wear a mask while traveling abroad – as a master certified scuba diver who hunts sharks with a camera.

Michael’s mother, Mary Tierney, created the portrait (at left) of Michael as a child.

ARTIST John Lucas

John Lucas is made entirely of popcorn and Caro syrup. It defies biology and common sense and has baffled the great minds of our times. Sadly, the judgements of such big-brained muckity-mucks come at no small cost. So, John must toil away for the few odd coins a cartoonist’s life will afford, that he may remain free of the chains of the debtors prison.

John’s work has appeared in funny books published by D.C./Vertigo, Marvel, MAD Magazine, Darkhorse, AdHouse, Image, Top Cow, Insight, 1First and BOOM!. If you don’t believe it, look it up.

The Outlaw of Torn Relaunch

Continue reading this popular comic strip story

Before Tarzan… there was Norman of Torn.
His origin cloaked in mystery, he is misguided by an evil force… all the while building the most powerful army in England.

Norman’s story begins in 1243, during the power struggle between King Henry III and the KIng’s brother-in-law, Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester. At 17, Norman of Torn was the Greatest Swordsman in England, at 18  he had a large bounty on his head, and at 19 he was the leader of the most powerful and ruthless army in the land. And, the outlaw Norman of Torn becomes the most feared warrior of all England.

Raised and taught by the French fencing master, Jules de Vac, Norman was trained to be a simple, brutal, English-hating, killing machine. The only influence over him, besides de Vac, is a Priest who taught Norman his letters and chivalry towards women. But, the Priest was found mysteriously murdered in his cottage. In another guise, that of Roger de Conde, Norman becomes involved with de Montfort’s daughter, Bertrade, defending her against her and her father’s enemies. She notes in him a curious resemblance to the English King’s son and heir, Prince Edward.

As Norman begins to sense his true origins, de Vac turns against Norman, costing de Vac his life. The fencing master had kidnapped Norman as a child to serve as the vehicle of vengeance against the King. As de Vac dies, he reveals Norman’s true origins. With his identity known, can Norman still be sure of winning the hand of Bertrade, daughter of Simon de Montfort, the King’s mortal enemy?

THE OUTLAW OF TORN TEAM

WRITER Tom Simmons

“I have been a Burroughs fan for a very long time,” says screenwriter-graphic novelist Tom Simmons. “At the age of 12 in 1962, I read the ACE paperback edition of Pirates of Venus, and never looked back. I’ve read everything else ERB wrote in the interim, many of the stories several times over.”

Perhaps it is fitting, then, that Simmons was given the opportunity to adapt ERB’s two historical novels, The Outlaw of Torn and I Am a Barbarian, into online strip format. The writer has a History degree, and his other material is in large part of that genre: in 2015 he adapted his screenplay Crispus Caesar about the 4th century struggle between paganism and Christianity into a graphic novel, and a year later he completed a spec script entitled Darling Eddy on the final horrific days of Edgar Allan Poe. Also on his writing desk are screen adaptations of Gore Vidal’s novel Julian about the so-called “apostate” Roman emperor and Richard Slotkin’s stark Civil War novel The Crater.

“Edgar Rice Burroughs advanced his storytelling expertise mightily between 1912 – when “Outlaw” was written – and 1941, the year of “Barbarian,” says the writer. Both stories have proven a massive challenge to adapt, and scale to online strip and eventually graphic novel format – but that’s a huge part of the fun.”

Tom was nominated in five categories at the Action on Film (AOF) festival in 2010.

ARTIST Jake Bilbao

Jake Bilbao is a Filipino Comic Book Artist. He has worked on Wolverine for Marvel Comics,Pathfinder for Dynamite Entertainment, Bloodrayne for Digitalwebbing Presents, and other Indie Comics. Jake is now working with Tom Simmons and L. Jamal Walton to make The Outlaw of Torn novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs into a comic strip format.

The Simmons/Bilbao/Walton team published a graphic novel set in the Age of Constantine calledCrispus Caesar (see Simmons bio).

LETTERS AND COLORING L Jamal Walton

L Jamal Walton is a web and graphic designer by day, and an illustrator, colorist and letterer by night. He is currently living in Durham, NC and enjoys working on all types of projects, but he especially likes working on projects that involve coloring and lettering.

Most recently, Jamal has been focusing more of his time working on his own comic creations:Warmageddon; Ungoodwise; and Captain Evil and Diabla.

Jamal has also made the leap into the art world and has been displaying his work at various art exhibits, shows and conventions within the RTP (Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill area of the state NC).

Now available in Soft Cover – ERB Wild Adventure Novel #8 Tarzan and the Revolution

Written by Thomas Zachek / Art by Mike Grell

Eric Benton, an idealistic young Midwestern Peace Corps volunteer, could hardly have known that his mission to help an African village would embroil him and his colleagues in the political struggles of an emerging African nation.

The people of central Africa likewise had no idea how quickly their expectations for freedom could be taken away when a ruthless dictator seizes power.

And Tarzan of the Apes had no idea that before long, he would be compelled, once again, to undertake a long and perilous journey with the Waziri to save their families.

Set against a backdrop of political unrest in modern Africa, Thomas Zachek’s latest page-turner takes the reader from the dank treasure troves of the lost city of Opar to turmoil in the city streets as Tarzan battles one of his most ruthless foes!

Order your copy of Tarzan and the Revolution today (available in Soft Cover and Hardcover with Dust Jacket) and enjoy this exciting new adventure – Book #8 in The Wild Adventures of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Series atERBurroughs.com. and Amazon.com.

AUTHOR

Thomas Zachek grew up on Tarzan movies and, to a lesser extent, the comics. He became hooked on the real Tarzan in high school after picking up a new Ace paperback edition of Tarzan and the Lost Empire for fifty cents–the one with the Frank Frazetta cover with Tarzan hanging from a limb on a cliff overlooking the Roman city. Thomas went on to collect the entire series of Ace and Ballantine paperback reissues of Burroughs’ Tarzan tales (he still has them).

Thomas discovered that Burroughs’ stories were quite unlike the family-friendly Tarzan of the movies, with Johnny Weismuller as the hulking hero living for some reason in the jungle with a classy, aristocratic Jane. No, Burroughs’ hero was actually a British lord who spoke educated English and had a fascinating backstory. Thomas was impressed with the superior level of development and action in these tales.

Nearly forty years passed, wherein most of the writing Thomas did was lesson plans, plus the occasional letter to the editor and a series of columns for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. He attempted writing his first Tarzan tale in 2005 as something of a lark, and then followed it, to date, with six more Tarzan tales. Friends encouraged Thomas to try to get the stories published. Thomas tells us he is grateful to Jim Sullos of ERB, Inc., for giving him the chance. The first three were published in 2016 in a volume entitled Tarzan Trilogy. Thomas notes, “This is my fourth tale. I have tried to craft realistic, page-turning adventure tales featuring classic Tarzan elements while at the same time taking the character in directions that have not been done in Tarzan stories before.”

We invite you to share your thoughts and comments with Thomas atzachekbooks@gmail.com.

The War Chief™ Comic Strip Relaunch

with a New Artist and Continuing with the Same Story and Writer

The War Chief is a realistic, historical novel about life and death on an Apache reservation during the final days of the Apache Wars. Decades before the movie Dances with Wolves, Edgar Rice Burroughs’ great respect for the West and his compassion regarding the exploitive treatment of Native Americans at the hands of the pin-dah-lickoyee (white eyes) caused him to write a story that is an honest and sympathetic portrait of native life that does credit to both the Natives and Edgar Rice Burroughs.

In 1897, Mr. Burroughs lived among the Apaches while stationed at Fort Grant in Arizona where he served in the US Army. Burroughs penned this story in vivid, realistic detail about day-to-day life on the Apache reservation — an adventure of the Old West — written by one who saw it with his own eyes.
